View Full Version : What Exactly is Neuro-Linguistic Programming and How Does It Differ From Hypnotism?
Could someone give me the difference in layman's terms and how it differs? I'm started to get interested in all of this stuff, I find it extremely interesting.
And how's this book for a start?

Razz,
May I suggest you search the archives of this list as there are a lot of good explanations and it might keep some busy people from having to repeat themselves.
If you don't find your answer in the archives please let us know and we'll do our best to help you.
To Your Best,

You will find your answers in the back pages of this forum. You also may wish to take a look at Merlin's FAQ's and booklist (Hypnosis) and Skip has posted a nice book recommendation for NLP.
If you still have questions, let us know. This really is a wonderful place to find knowledge and to be able (somewhat) to figure things out. Some things have been a little "grumpy" around here for a few days but that sure isn't your problem, is it?
And, in answer to your question: Not really.
Have fun and learn!

I am a layman. I have come to the conclusion that NLP is the scientific study of human reaction and reaction.
How the mind works.
If I say blue... are you more likely to say red or green? Sounds silly... but we are all relatively predictable.
NLP is the art of taking those predictions and changing the response.
Hi Mr Omega,
OK I'll bite.
What color did I respond with?

Sir... I haven't the slightest clue... I am highly skeptical that neuro linguistic programming works...
I am however completely sure of the fact that there is the study of neuro linguistics and some are searching for patterns to manipulate.
If I spin my wheels for the next few months and come to the sad realization that colors are irrelevant and providing you with choice is the only means to make one feel secure about themselves and confident in their forward movement through life... then so be it...
Maybe we should focus more on recognizing those searching for the NLP patterns so that we can give back to them what they feel they lack.
Red, Green, Blue... RBG... perhaps because I am a computer programmer I would be more inclined to say Green after Blue...
If I wanted to impress you I would say orange...

May I suggest a read through the past pages of this Forum regarding what NLP is. As a computer programmer, you should really love it. Who's driving your "bus"???? Pood
Oh sorry, I thought you said you had come to a conclusion about NLP, "I have come to the conclusion that NLP is the scientific study of human reaction and reaction." and then gave an example.
I only sought to test your conclusion via your example.
Should I or you conclude that your conclusion is innaccurate?
Or should I or you conclude that your conclusion is accurate but that you do not have the requisite skill?
As an NLP trainer I would suggest the former.
But that is just one opinion.

My conclusion was honest... I speak how I feel and I say who I am from the heart...
Sorry did I indicate otherwise?
Or rather did I indicate that your conclusion is honestly incorrect, especially so, if your example reasonably follows from your conclusion?

Was I not clear with my intentions?
What should we do now that we are locked in an endless spiral of questioning each other?
Will we gain anything from this except to come to know each other better?

and yes... that is my cheap ass attempt at leading and pacing... it's my first try... please don't call me a spammer...
"Was I not clear with my intentions?"
I dont know if you were or not. I do know you stated a conclusion about NLP.
As someone who knows NLP well, I recognized the conclusion to be incorrect. I offered you evidence of its incorrectness using your proffered example.
You seem to have taken that to be questioning your integrety.
Is that a reasonably correct assessment?
"What should we do now that we are locked in an endless spiral of questioning each other?"
Are we?
Is it really endless?
What is your basis for these conclusions, which I suspect are your honest ones, but also incorrect.
"Will we gain anything from this except to come to know each other better?"
I confess, I dont know.
"and yes... that is my cheap ass attempt at leading and pacing... it's my first try..."
Perhaps a basic understanding of what pacing and leading are, would have been benificial, before making the maiden attempt.
"please don't call me a spammer..."
Why would I do that, are you a spammer?

My conclusion was immediate and based on a days worth of study...
I did in fact let my credibility be known from the start... it was your sharp wit and willingness which threw me off... nervousness if you will...
Of course it's not endless... you have certainly engaged me and I thank you for allowing me to practice without fully understanding the consequence or the benefit. Or really the meaning of it at all...
I wondered to myself today if NLP's can dance... would they want to? I am almost certain Hypnotists can... and do very often... There is an attractive characteristic to hypnosis while NLP gives this impression of clinical boredom.
