Hey guys, I'm a hobbyist magician and I just recently started taking a look at hypnosis (thanks to the brilliant Derren Brown).

I wanted to learn about inductions and ways to incorporate them into my routine. This summer I will be looking for some courses to take (I live in Windsor, Ontario, Canada) but as of now I would be content with other resources.

Could somebody give me some resources or online material to things such as handshake interruption inductions, or things related to that? I don't want to move too quick, because just like magic, I understand it takes practice to perfect.

Also, are there any videos or resources to this as well? Is there a video where a stage magician would take you under his wings and help you?

I also heard this book was good, do you agree?

Thanks a lot!

Hi, Razz. The book you have listed is considered by many to be the "bible" of stage hypnosis. I certainly recommend it highly.

The other things are a bit more difficult. First, what you've seen of Derren Brown is neither hypnosis nor NLP. Rather, it is patter used for misdirection as part of magic tricks. I agree that he preforms brilliantly--especially to convince people he's using hypnosis or NLP.

The book will give you information you need. I would also suggest that you consider taking courses in public speaking, acting, and perhaps even dancing (for grace) because if you come out on stage as a hypnotist you don't have silks, balls, cards, coins, or boxes of multiple sizes to hide behind. It's all you, Razz, and all of the sleight of hand won't help you if you really want to do stage hypnosis.

If you do a web search I'm sure you'll find out about handshake interrupt inductions. However, it's not like one page of instructions you might find that come with a zombie ball or square circle. It involves careful observation, preparation, and working with feedback--both obvious and subtle--you receive from the person you are working with. I would respectfully suggest studying the book and work with its techniques before focusing on the handshake interrupt. Once you have those techniques, such inductions will become more obvious and quite easy.

Contact a stage hypnotist in your area and ask about apprenticing. The worst they'll do is say "no," and you'll increase your odds of getting a "yes" if you ask.

Finally, if you're not really interested in doing hypnosis, but rather, want to do tricks that simply look like hypnosis and/or NLP, I would suggest checking out the website of Kenton Knepper. He reveals the "real" work. Unfortunately--or perhaps fortunately--it's not cheap.

Hi Razz,

Don is humble. I suspect that is why he did not refer you to
use the search function of this forum to find what discussion
around the entertainer you mentioned has taken place. If you
do that, you may find the information to be helpful to you.

McGill has been replaced in favor of a book written by a new stage hypnotist in England. It is The Art of Stage Hypnosis by Wm. Farrell. Connie would be in on all the "in's and out's" of this as she took a training in Las Vegas. I'm sure she will lend you her expertise in the matter.

The handshake interrupt you can buy on eBay for $50 by Bandler but you probably won't understand it.

If you ever want to get serious about "magic" I sorta think Don has written a book on the subject. He is one very multi-talented individual.

Watch the nlp-times.com as often Tom and Vic do Mr. Brown complete with instructions. (I have a link posted in the NLP section) Don and I disagree on Derren Brown and I can only guess that is because he knows something I don't know or I know something he doesn't know.

I know a professional stage hypnotist who trains (groups) and also offers individual one-on-one "mentoring." If you're interested, PM me.

Just as a heads up: I do not have a book on stage magic that is currently available. I did write a book under a pseudonym for advanced magicians that was published many years ago and advertised in magazines for magicians. It is now out of print.

Hi Razz

I started a while ago with magic, hypnosis, huna, yellow bamboo and NLP and already can say NLP works for me!:)

NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming made me realize that the power of achievement is inside yourself.
What you think has a strong impact on the result of that thought.
For instance when you feel bad; by thinking and visualizing that you feel good, you'll start to feel good in no time!

I know from personal experience. There was a time that I was feeling real depressed and had no energy left to do anything.
Thanks to NLP, combinated with yellow bamboo I've found what i was looking for: a positive thinking mind(NLP) and lots of energy to realize all of my goals :D

This is good stuff for you too I believe, because you wrote "I wanted to learn about inductions and ways to incorporate them into my routine.
This summer I will be looking for some courses to take (I live in Windsor, Ontario, Canada) but as of now I would be content with other resources."

Because I live in Belgium it was quite difficult to find a high quality course to follow. Yet I've found some good online courses with good guidance and feedback if wanted.
You'll learn secrets that most people will never know about personal and spiritual growth.
i'd like to give you some links and adresses about it but I prefer to do it in private message beacause I don't want to give them to 'just anybody'.

So if you want some good stuff about hypnosis, huna, magic and so on: PM me!

I'd love to help;)
