1) "I'd rather spend the evening with you, but it'll be a good night out all the same".

2) "Although it'll be a good night out, I'd rather spend the evening with you"

3) "I'd rather spend the evening with you, although it will be a good night out".

Can the sentence structure really be indicative of the meta state?

1) says - *i can't have the opportunity to spend the evening, still I'm not going to not enjoy myself

2) says - it'll be a good night out, but not as good as the one we'd have together

3) says what 1) says, but subtler toward it's correct interpretation (assuming what 1 says is what one says*)

Or is it that these are all saying the same thing?

;)

Go to the book "Reframing" and read about "Parts" -- about 1/4 of the way into it. NLP Parts - not TA Parts, etc. Pood :)

Since I assume you would be writting to a female, I suggest that in spite of differences in perception, the most important act is to ensure that the flattery is paramount AND FIRST....:) Once she reads that first part, all is forgiven, and she will hope you do enjoy yourself slightly....:D
Oh yes, take that as based on experience and not on some system. I do know my women believe me....

Thanks Pood, I'll look that up :)

Terry,

Since I assume you would be writting to a female, I suggest that in spite of differences in perception, the most important act is to ensure that the flattery is paramount AND FIRST....:) Once she reads that first part, all is forgiven, and she will hope you do enjoy yourself slightly....:D

Thanks, yes writing to a female is correct and 3) or something akin was the option selected somehow with the thought that it would run better - in fact it was "I'd rather spend the evening with you all told, tho it'll be a good night out right enough..". But you know it got me thinking because I think what was conveyed / held at heart was something more akin to 2)'s interpretation - "It'll be a good night out, but not as good as the one we'd have together" - certainly the state about the night out was that a night out with the lady would be a better night out than the one obligated to attend (friends birthday, which would still be a good night out, just not as desireable). But reading of from 1) or it's variation (i.e. "I'd rather spend the evening with you, but it will be a good night out" ) it seems that the state about the night out is that it'll be a good night out, and not that a better night out would be had with the lady. So opt for the flattery and don't go wrong... even though what is really meant (2)) is the more complimentary state to be in about it all, the genuine state and the one that lead to using 1) instead... It's a funny old business :)

How about,

"I'll do my best to have a good time, and even though you cannot be there with me, you will be constantly in my thoughts ..."

After all Soren, it is the Valentine month, and Tennessee is a meta state. ;)

Glad to see read is well with you with that weather that passed through last night!! Even though it snowed all afternoon here my mind has been on spring and I made a nice sized order of plants to be delivered the first of April so I can get them going in the house really well before outside in the middle to end of May. "...Or is it that these are all saying the same thing?"

The more they say anything, the more they are destroying what is being done and experienced...

In your statement list I see a general lack of spontaneity.. meaning, a void of living life to its fullest.. and in the case of those statements, an overall self destructive attitude, not life based, but more likely religious based.. in other words, "living a portion of hell on earth"...

In the jungle.. does the tiger pause in its attack to ponder, "would that beast's meat be tasty or not..? will its meat be stringy..? will its blood be warm and salty..? will it be a fun kill..? will it escape?..

Wow, you see all that... I wonder, is there any particular reason I should take you seriously?

You seem to be saying that living life to its fullest is to live according to impulse. I'm reminded of something my dear Ma used to have in her sig line, it went something like - "only the mediocre individual is living to his full potential". Is this apt to what you want to say? I don't know... However, I am certain in my own mind that the life according to impulse is not worth living, I'm smarter than the other animals, and will always retain and strive toward ever greater freedom, never to become a slave to paltry impulse. Care is the fundamental condition which opens up the possibility of my freedom, this is naturally endowed, whether, or wherever you locate its source, it is a fundamental aspect of human existence. To deny it is to deny everything that makes you you. So, if you want to live your life to the fullest by your animal instincts alone, of you trot.. I'll push your buttons, and you can be my latest circus act. How does that grab you :) <mirth>
