Hello,
I have very little experience with hypnosis. I'm a professional poker player who has recently been studying the topic of deception.
When most people think of spotting a liar they think of definite tells, actions like facial twitches, eye movement, shaking hands. However, in reality there are no such definitive universal tells. Instead, different people have different actions when they are being deceptive. As a poker player I've found that I can typically read an opponent as either strong or weak, however, cannot make very detailed assesments about their level of deception or honesty.
What separates the good poker players from the world class ones is an ability to read ones opponents. Many of the top pros have been quoted saying that their technique for reading opponents does not come from observing concrete tells, but instead comes from a subconcious assesement of the situation. At the poker table, typically a "feeling" is much more powerful than an observation, and often much more reliable. From experience, it seems like you just know if a player is bluffing, you don't know why you know, but you just do, and like wise you just know when an opponent holds a monster hand. I hope this is making sense.
So now to my question. I've heard that hypnosis can unleash some of the potential of the subconcious mind. I'm curious if it would have any use in training myself into being better at reading opponents. Poker involves determining what an opponent is holding and then acting on that judgement. Typically a player uses the opponents betting history, statistical analysis, the actions in the play of the particular poker hand, and overall feel of the situation to put opponents on a range of hands. I'm curious to know if using hypnosis to better read the opponents "body language" is possible.
Thanks for any and all replies,
Zephyr
