Is there a useful model to have when learning and understanding nlp? There must be a gap in my consciousness that i'm not utilizing to make better use of hypnosis/nlp. I suppose these are the "tools". Besides jumping into a deep book that can be confusing, is NLP basically the delete, distort, generalize and then it goes deeper..? Are there certain understandings that should be made first in order to have a better understanding of nlp?

Instead of answering, let me ask. How much of this boards Q&A have you read before asking your question?

I have found it useful to start with the NLP Presuppositions.
Learn Rapport, Predicates and Predicate Phrases (the representational systems), Calibration skills, Eye Accessing, Anchoring etc. BEFORE jumping into the META Model and the Milton Model.
Which books have you read and thoroughly understood so that you can move on? Without knowing exactly where you are in this process, it would be difficult to answer.

None. Nice point.

I've read about presuppositions in Magic but at one time, it It didn't make sense. Presuppositions can be assuming something and also the opposite of the statement? Never studied the Predicate phrases. i'll learn more nlp before I read patturns.

I've never read a book all the way. I've read some of Frogs into Princes Some of Structure of Magic I (which I liked). Im guessing this is a mixture of Virginia Satir and Milton Erickson?

There are UNIVERSAL BELIEFS IN NLP THAT WE ADHERE TO THAT ARE CALLED THE NLP PRESUPPOSITIONS. One has been discussed on this Forum. "What does the "Map is Not the Territory" mean. We don't teach but occasionally some pearls are found in this place.
Read Structure of Magic I (Chapter 4 is backwards, okay?)
Structure of Magic II
Frogs ...
Now the secret to reading books, is to read the whole book -- sometimes 15 times. Each time you read the book, you will find something new that you missed "consciously" before.
If you want to drift into the hypnosis and Milton Model, there are The Hypnotic Techniques of MHE, Vol. I and II. Trance-Formation is also a lovely read but right now you want to pick up the basics in NLP without "drifting". You can drift later on and really enjoy that drifting.
Wise words, Pood. Ultimately Figure is going to have to put in the work.

Have any of you read Instant Repport by Michael Brooks and if so, would you recommend it?

Thanks Don! And also, I've read from several sources about Mirroring. One source said you mirror the movement, for example: by using the same arm as the person, e.g., they move their left arm, you use your left arm. But another source stated the opposite. Which is correct?

Both. Mirroring and matching. Mirroring implies to me mirror images...his left arm, your right (assuming you're facing each other). You're not supposed to think about it so heavily. Just go with it. I don't think about it at all...and rapport still happens. I believe that's the goal. :D

You may be able to find out about crossover mirroring from some of Skip's posts in the past. It ALL works! Doesn't make one right and another wrong. One uses what's available at the time. It sounds strange, I know, but one has to be flexible enough in OUR behaviour to get what WE want. ;)

I just found out about the oldforum today. That must be where all the "gems" are.

I haven't had time to look through this forum or the old. I've been way too busy with my life, work, school. Hopefully I'll have some time to look over them.
