View Full Version : heavily fluttering eyes: symptom of trance?
Sometimes when I practice self-hypnosis (or more appropriately, self-trance), I find that when I close my eyes they flutter uncontrollably. Almost like a little spasm... and I think they don't want to relax.
I experienced this same behavior with my eyes when I went to see a hypnotist... I mentioned what I felt, and she basically told me to ignore it, that it wasn't important.
Is this fluttering likely an indicator of trance, or just a random behavior of my eyes? I find it disconcerting, particularly if I'm trying to relax my eyes and the rest of my face!
One interesting self-observation is that if I'm in bed for the night and close my eyes to go to sleep, they don't flutter. If I'm in bed the same way but close my eyes as part of trance practice, then I get the fluttering behavior... so sometimes I pretend I'm going to sleep first, to try and calm my eyes. :D
Thoughts?

Hello,
Eyelid flutter, or REM are *possible* indicators of trance, but not necessarily.
Each of us is different and may respond differently.
A person may be in trance with their eyes open too.
Then, such fluttering seldom happens.
Hm.
Thanks for weighing in.

It is likely that you are experiencing an altered or trance state since you can differentiate it from the feelings of sleep. If that is the case then the fluttering eyelids may well be an indicator. As your hypnotist said it is not really important, unless you are looking for a confirmation that you are hypnotised.

My overall feeling is nothing like sleep; but nothing I would consider anything beyond a light trance, at best, either.
If I have the mindset that I'm going to bed, my eyes stay closed and relaxed.
But if I have the mindset that I'm doing hypnosis, my eyes when closed do the heavy fluttering and don't feel relaxed.
I will continue to (do my best to) ignore the eyes; perhaps reframing that as a byproduct of my process. :D
I admit, being able to use the jumpy eyes as a confirmation tool of an altered state would be convenient, because I'd have no question about my state then!
Thanks. I'm thinking about going back to this hypotist for a session that includes a more profound trance state. I begin to suspect that would be more beneficial that continual practice of the state I reach now.

You would be amazed at what can be accomplished in a 'light' state. Much of NLP depends upon such a state, with powerful results.
Your hypnotist should be able to induce at least a somnambulistic state, and if he or she can do this then you could ask them to anchor that state for you so that you can enter it when you wish to. When you have done that come back and let us know if you are aware of any eye fluttering.
Good luck.

Last night when I did my self-hypnosis I did notice a fluttering of my eye lids. First time. It soon went away as trance continued.

The power of suggestion is truly amazing isn't it?;)
