I am fairly new to hypnosis. I am planning on taking a course to learn hypnotherapy. So far I have only experimented on my wife. And by experimenting, I have only gone as far as induction, deepening, and a test to see if she's hypnotized, then bringing her back out with suggestions that she is a wonderful person and feeling rested and energized (while bringing her out). I have not "played" with her, making her do parlor tricks, or tried to change anything about her, etc. I have read enough to know that should be left for when I have learned more.

I have read on here, as well as other sites, that hypnosis can be used to reduce labor pain. I shared this with my wife, suggesting that perhaps instead of getting an epidural, she look into having a hypnotherapist help her with her labor. She did not like the idea of having someone she did not know hypnotize her. We are short on time, as she is due in 3 days, so she could not go see someone ahead of time and get comfortable with them. She instead insists that I hypnotize her and try to alleviate her pain while she is in labor. I told her I am not experienced in this, and while I can get her hypnotized easily, wouldn't know where to go from there. She has seen the scripts I have downloaded from various sites, and simply told me to find one for pain management and use that one. She said that either I do it or she will get an epidural (which she really doesn't want to do) but that someone else is out of the question.

My question is, if I did as she wishes and use a script to try to ease her pain, what consequences can it have, other than not working and her having to get an epidural, as she was intending to before, if the pain got too bad. My thinking is that scripts are generic, and do not fit everyone equally, and worst case scenario would be that it did nothing for her pain, and she ends up with an epidural. Please do not insult me or tell me how absurd or stupid this idea is, as I have not told her I will do it, and really am trying to make an informed decision before I agree or decline. Thank you for your input, and I am posting on here because I have respect for the collective knowledge on this board.

You ask about possible consequences. Here are some: an abreaction or
disappointment and using suggestions that can inadvertently cause difficulties
for your wife. There is a recent thread on hypnosis and labor that you
can find by using the Search function to run the word "hypnobirthing."

Sounds like your doing the right stuff with your wife! There is much emphasis placed on relaxation and breathing out because it is necessary to synchronise corresct breathing with contractions. In this way a rhythm of breathing may be associated with symptom free contractions.

A good hypnotist could totally eliminate the pain.

I doubt you'd cause any problems. You just lack the knowledge/experience to be as successful as someone more experienced.
