I for one am not a master of this art, or will I properly ever be. The minds mysteries may for ever be concealed from us but for those how are investing time in this art of ours then don't despair, your hours of research and practise will pay off.
After assimilating 2 books, including the art of stage hypnotism, I tried the 'hand locking' test a very simple test, or so it would seem. However I failed a few times. so again after consulting a few more times and reading more, I went for some of the earlier tests and after succeeding at that again tried the hand locking test, some of you may assume here that it worked, well it didn't. Not at first. Then one day it clicked, I wasn’t even considering hypnotism when it did I was doing a card trick, and when you manipulate cards you have to do it smoothly with out fear and just do it. This may be hard to describe, so picture riding a bike, when you first start your fear stops you, you have to-do it with out doubt and put this belief into your 'client'/'committee' what ever.
Once I removed this doubt and believe in my own skills, people's hands locked together and the process (it’s the wrong word but can’t think of any better) becomes trivial.
This lesson took me a year to learn so I hope I can shave the learning curve for you a little bit.
If I am in anyway wrong I hope people more skilled will point me in the right direction.

O btw Merlin may I post a link to your FAQ off my site. I believe it to be a very valuable resource is demystifying hypnotism in general.
