View Full Version : Unable to build emotional states

I have trouble applying just about any NLP technique, and i have seen no results what so ever from NLP, in 2 years of studying material and books mainly by richard bandler I must admit i have never done any practical learning of NLP which i would be more than willing to invest in if only i can see even some small results from the knowledge i know of NLP now.
A lot of techniques involve you going into your past or an imaginary future to elicit certain states of mind which can then be anchored.
I can’t seem to do this. First problem i find is the actual recall of a past events that would evoke feelings of (confidence, Happiness, relaxation, motivation etc). A lot of older people 40+ i would imagine go back to their teen years for their ideal states. I am only 21 and my past history doesn’t seem to contain the feeling i want. and before the age of roughly 15 when i was still happy i cant recall.....
So basically i can’t create states to anchor. And also the actual task of having to go inside yourself and remember this stuff seem's tiresome and tedious which it really shouldn’t because im doing nothing physical or exerting.
Any suggestions welcome :)

hello,
i found it helpful to work with another person while learning. many of the cool states can be found in childhood like the excitement of learning to tie a shoe or spell your name.

Dan this is quite common
I use a different method to help students build emotional states
Imagine the state of happiness as a glow ball floating in front
of you.
Just imagine ( its not real just a bit of fun...
What colour is it?
Imagine it having a colour remember its just a bit of fun...
Stick your hand in it what does it feel like, is it warm / cold / does it make a humming noise?
If you brought the ball closer to your chest what happens notice anything different? What if you movd it away?
What if you made the ball bigger / smaller notice anything different
Now sprinkle some humour dust it (Think of a time when you laughed if
this helps) has this changed the colour of the glow ball - what about
the texture?
Add some more, what about if you add in a little play fullness and
then some fun, then some confidence? What about a little intrigue...
Or try this
Imagine a feeling of happiness, guess where this feeling is in your body
I always imagine it in my stomach.
If it had colour what colour would be, would be moving, IE spinning, rotating, moving upwards, downward pulsing?
Start to spin the feeling imagine it spiining in a certain direction does that change the intensity?
Try reversing the direction, spin it faster and faster and
faster and that direction.
Change the colour...
Then think about all the good things you want to achieve, spin the feeling faster and faster see yourself achieving a goal think about those good feelings and make them bigger and spin faster and faster.....
Theres lots more of this type of stuff on my site...

NLP is a powerful set of techniques which can create enormous changes.
I don't think you'd call yourself a brain surgeon after studying books for 2 years. Instead, you'd go to classes and train to prepare yourself.
Respectfully, I think you would have a great deal more success if you take some training rather that just study books.

My point is im not willing to invest time and money until i see some results from my understanding of NLP.
"NLP is a powerful set of techniques which can create enormous changes. "
Well i can run through techniquies same as anyone else such as the post above by marc and i feel nothing, i can imagine it but i cant notice any changes or feeling maybe they are there but so subtle i dont notice.
Richard bandlers Neurosonics tape's had no effect on me at all and if bandler cant effect me with NLP....
Yes you are right, you are probably hopeless, and would only find out that you are incapable of utilizing NLP. You have done all that you could.
Now, before you decide to stay stuck in 'angry', because of what I just wrote to you, think back a moment, to how many emotional states you went thru in order to get to 'angry'. If that is indeed the state you arrived at.
Im going to guess at this, so we know it wont be exactly accurate.
You saw a responding post and no doubt were curious. You started to read and began to wonder just what I meant, and perhaps became a bit miffed that I was saying you werent capable of getting it. Then perhaps you were dissapointed because you expected something better from me. Then you maybe thought, "Who does this SOB think he is?" "He doesnt know about me!"
Now thats several state changes that you fully occupied and most of them were completely outside of your conscious awareness.
And there is the rub.
NLP requires that you intervene and make changes before people "get to" the final state that they find less than useful, and redirect to somewhere else. Sine the interviening states are generally 'outside of consciousness' how does somene who isnt yet skilled learn to 'catch what is going on outside of their own awareness? It isnt easy, it can be done, but it isnt easy.
Thats why most early NLP practie is done with someone else. And it is best done with someone who is already skilled. They know how to detect what you are doing as you go thru those interviening states at the "speed of light", and to redirect before you get to the 'stuck state'.
Many people say NLP is best suited for changing others than for changing yourself. And that is true in that it is easier to change others. BUT working with a partner you can achieve all the personal change you want, because they help you.

btw i started to smile after reading the first few lines cos i knew where you were going with it, which would of been unconcious to me also...
