Do professional hypnotists ( or NLP trainers, etc ) ever get temporary voice/throat/speaking problems, in a way similar to how some singers get it, and others in the more 'vocal' professions, and if so what do professional hypnotists do about such problems if they themselves get it?

I've heard some singers take some special stuff that coats the lining of the throat, to at least let them 'perform' properly.

Do professional hypnotists/hypnotherapists/NLPtrainers ever do something like this, and if so what is the stuff called that you take?

Thanx for any info you may have.

Water.

If you were suffering from Laryngitis, to the degree that you couldnt speak, and you had a siminar up comming, you might use something more extensive.

And what would that 'more extensive' product be?

Well this maybe gets in to a bit of woo woo.

Early in my NLP training we did some exercises centered around 'wellness' for lack of a better term. Since that time, I havent been sick. No headaches, no flu, no colds, no hay fever, etc.

I broken bones, Ive suffered heat exaustion, Ive had a hip problem, but I havent been sick.

Im not going to make claims, or attribute something where it cannot be conclusively proven. But after 20 =/- years of not being sick, I wouldnt have a clue as to what to take, if anything, were I to become sick.

So rather than concern myself over preserving my 'hypnotic voice' which as far as I can tell is also my regular voice, I trust my unconscious to help me be in the best condition to accomplish what ever it is that I set out to do.

Is that a better answer?

Skip, yes, thank-you, it is a better answer.

And I am not skeptical or surprised at your answer. Yourself, and others on this forum, are obviously very skilled.

I have issues re sinus, colds, sore throat, that regularly plague me, and that are so familiar that they seem almost a natural part of me. In fact I don't even mind them that much. However, recently I read out some inductions aloud, as opposed to just in my head, and I realised my voice was struggling.

That is why I asked the question.

Thanks for your response.

Since this is a hypnosis board, it makes sense to deal with the problem rather than the symptoms. What makes me wonder, is the suggestion that we might have more problems than those in other professions. Does that mean to suggest we talk too much? Terry

No, of course not.

But speaking non-stop for 30 minutes or more ( i.e. when inducing trance etc ) is unusual, compared to some other professions. e.g. computer programmers never speak to anyone except to the pizza delivery boy for approx 2 nano-seconds.

hello,

I like to suck on a cherry lifesaver when my throat feels tired or raw.

I agree with everyone here with regards to

Water
Throat Soothing Sweets
Self hypnosis for well being ( personally find this very effective)

However regarding 30 minutes to induce a trance ( this in my opinion is a very long time) are you watching your clients or do you have a certain script?

Once a person is in a trance and I accidently cough, or there is noise outside,
usually the person does'nt notice or I use this as a deepener, something like and "though there are distractions you can relax even more..."

I respectfully suggest that you look at your induction and see if you can increase the speed of induction using non verbal or minimal verbal techniques like arm catelepsy, and anchoring to move them into trance quicker and save on your voice...

All the best

When I do my training siminars, I 'talk' off and on from 9:00 am to midnight and beyond, for two or three days straight.

When I do tapes and Cd's, I will talk for an hour, sometimes more, if I do it all in one take.

Obviously my voice is important to me.

I highly recommend anyone who is serious about hypnosis, to get some voice coaching. NOT because there is some "hypnotic voice" that needs to be developed, but because it is very important to develop a pleasing voice, one that is pleasant to listen to, and to develop a range of tonality, so you can vary your voice tone, to emphasize words, or phrases.

Most people find irritating voices, tempo, and such distracting, and it behoves us all to pay attention to how we sound to others.

Instead of the harsh grating of a nail file on a tooth, it is best to sound like warm butter being spread on bread.

I strongly agree with Skip. If you're going to make a living being a doctor, it makes sense that you learn medicine. If you're going to make a living by talking, it makes sense to learn how to talk.

Classes on singing would be very good for this. So, too, would be classes on public speaking.

Neither, because I'm not a hypnosis pro, as yet, and only practise self-hypnosis so far, but my increasing interest in nlp/hypnosis has started to make me inevitably more aware of my voice, and possible problems.
