Hello,
I have recently become interested in hypnosis, and am thinking of studying it at college, but a friend has told me that I would only be able to practise hypnosis professionally if I wear purple clothes.
Is this true?
Because if so, it is really a problem for me, because purple is my least favorite color. I wonder would it be OK to wear blue, which I suppose is quite close to purple, and which I quite like, although my preference is really to wear black, which I like a lot, but I wouldn't want to scare my patience.
Many thanks for your help with this colorful issue.
Scilly.

Hello Scilly,
I suspect that your friend may be pulling your leg, or someone pulled his/her
leg about the purple color thing. Maybe someone saw a professional
hypnotist that wore that color on more than one occasion and presumed
that it may have been in conformance with a required color code. There
is no such requirement.
There was one very prominent hypnotist, Dr. Milton Erickson, that was
known for wearing purple clothing. He was color blind and it was said
that he maintained this color eccentricity because otherwise he could
mismatch the colors of socks, etc.
I also happen to like the color blue, by the way.

Perhaps not so silly after all. Try wearing missmatched socks next time you work with a client. They will cocentrate on them so much, that you will be able to get any suggestion accepted without complaint, they won't even have heard you conciously (EG) Terry

Oh come on Terry,
You men wear mismatched sox all the time.
I doubt any of you would notice someone else being mismatched ;-D

For heavens sake, that would only apply to single men surely? Terry

Mmmmm. Possibly, my wife thinks I'm odd anyway, so mismatched socks wouldn't make any difference :D :D
I like to wear the socks that have individual toes, each a different color, with my sandals.
And yes, I know, only yankees wear socks with sandals.

Why would anyone wear socks with sandals? I thought the idea of sandals was to have the feet exposed to the eliments for cooling during the hot weather?
Now I do recognise that covering the skin can cause cooling just as exposing it can cause heat and burn, but in that case, perhaps one should never wear sandals eh? OK you have me convinced, sandals should only be worn with socks, or as the Yanks say sox. Damn, when will you guys learn to spell? Terry

Likely so Terry.
We women havi it made *in that respect*...
Hard to mismatch Pantyhose. :-D
Actually Terry, I have gotten to the point that I wear sandals almost all the time, winter, summer, all the time.
In winter, with a thick pair of wool socks, my feet stay toasty, and much more comfortable than in anything else.
Now Im not talking designer sandals, or Berkinstocks, or some such, but river sandals.
The kind river raft guides tend to wear, because they stay securely on your feet, provide arch support, and such.
I even know some people who hike in them, a far cry from the heavy hiking boots, eh.
So yes, if you see some tall, extremely good looking gentleman, either casually dressed up, or down, in sandals and socks, at your next hypnosis convention, come up, and lets get aquainted better. :)

You would be right at home out here in the Pacif NorthWest, home of fleece, flannel, cargo pants and shorts and Teva's or Columbia sandals all year long with rag wool socks..

Hello again,
I have passed on your various comments to my friend, and he has told me that instead of all this confusion about clothes re colors and socks and sandals and pantyhose and etc etc, that the simplest thing would be for the hypnotist to just be naked. He says that it wouldn't make any difference, because all the patience have their eyes closed when they are in a trance, anyway, and in fact it would even be OK for the patience to be naked as well, since it would help them achieve a state of age regression, which is useful in hypnosis.
It's seems odd to me, but then my friend lives in California, so who knows.
Scilly.
Scilly,
The truth is that a good hypnotist is quite likely to detect that someone is distracted in some way, and utilize that to help induce trance.
There are no resistant clients, or distracted clients, only hypnotists who missed something.
Naked would be fine, as long as both are comfortable in their skin. In fact Ive done it in group nudist situations. Never did figure out how to utilize mosquitos tho.

>because all the patience have their eyes closed when they are in a trance...
Not necessarily so. Eye closure is not a part of hypnosis.

At long last, we get the whole, and naked truth. The original information came from "CALIFORNIA" of all places. If only we had known that sooner (G) Here in Canada, we have grown to accept that it is NOT Texas but California from which silly tales spread. Texas only supplies TALL tales........I offer no apology to those who live in those states, I merely quote what we have observed. Terry
