Hello, I'm Emily and I'm 16 years old. Since January of 2002, I've suffered from panic attacks and was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and mild depression in March of 2002. The symptoms started in September of 2001, but my parents and I were unsure what this was.

All my life I've seemed to have an anxiety disorder, it was just not as present as it was when I hit puberty. At the age of nine I was told I had a separation anxiety disorder. I feared dying, my mother dying, vomiting, and various other things. I suffered through elementry school, and in 8th grade (2002) i was taken out of school because of my panic attacks. I did not return back to school until 2003 - 9th grade. Next year I will be going into 11th. However, school has been extremely hard and stressful for me, and a fun teenage experience I should be having is a nightmare. I miss out on doing normal things with my friends.

I'm currently on four medications for anxiety and depression. I've been on them for consistently 2 1/2 years.

My friend's mother recently read a book by Dr. Weiss (sp?). He worked with a woman who suffered from anxiety through hypnosis. However, she (what's the word?) "discovered" her past lives through it. My same friend also has an aunt who went through Past-Life Regression. She remembers every detail about her past life. My father quit smoking by working with a hypnotist.

So here's the question(s):
Should someone my age go through something like that?
Have any of you worked with hypnosis and found it successful?

If you could answer any of these, or give me any information, I would be greatly appreciative. I'm going to my psychiatrist on Tuesday (June 22nd) and I plan to talk with her about it. Thank you!

Hello Emily,

Hypnosis can likely help, and maybe totally releive you of these issues. However, the idea of it being a 'past life' is not something to be concerned about. A skilled hypnotist will ask your subconscious mind how things can be made better. If 'past life' is an issue, then your own inner mind would be the determining factor.
The hypnotist should *never* start with a preconceived idea as to what your particular issues are.

Your age is not an issue as far as hypnosis, but the hypnotist will likely want permission from your parent and a referral from you doctor.

There are many part-time-hobbyist hypnotists, so take your time and fine someone who regularly works with people like yourself. This doesn't mean a wall covered with degrees, only that the once-a-week hypnotist who mostly does weight-loss and stop-smoking isn't necessarily the best choice.
