Hi I am new here. I am Basil and have a problem with driiving due to having had two bad panic attacks in the car in the middle of the summer! One whilst I was driving, the other as a passenger. Since then I have been siffering with anxiety and although I am slowly but surely getting over it, I still cant seem to get back into driving again. I am aware that our thoughts are greatly exaggerated and distorted out of all proportion when we are in an anxiety state and feel that when I am back to rational thinking again, maybe I wont see driving as being so frightening.

Has anyone got any ideas or suggestions that would help me with this as I feel that not driving has delayed my recovery and its not easy in as much that I have got two kids and I cannot take them anywhere in the school holidays whilst I cannot drive.

Basically I need to "forget" being frightened, but how?

Thanks
Basil

Hi, Basil.

If you wanted to learn piano, I would suggest going to a piano teacher.
If your arm were broken, I would suggest going to a physician.
If your plumbing sprung a leak, I would suggest calling a plumber.

These are the "ideas or suggestions" I would give in those circumstances.

And if someone described the behaviors you have, I would suggest that a person go to a hypnotherapist.

And no, there is far more to dealing with changing the behaviors you've described that "basically" needing to "forget being frightened."

Basil, Don has gone as far as he ethically can in offering advice. Note he didn;t say HOW therapy should be structured, and this is because he has no knowledge of you as a person, or anything about you that might direct him. A local will be able to interview you, and decide on the proper course of action for you specifically, and in that way, get you results quickly and permanently. We are unable to do this based on a post, or even a dozen posts.

...and if you don't fancy hypnotherapy then NLP will do just the same for you.
