View Full Version : Self-hypnosis = hypnosis

The strangest problem came to my mind days ago. I was trying to solve it by myself BUT the problem is that I do not have proper knowledge and experiences.
So the question was if suggestions given to yourself BY yourself in self-hypnosis are as effective as those that are given by some other person. Knowing that the person experiencing hypnosis in both cases is highly trained hypnotherapist.
Logic tells me that they should. But I just can't back it up with my tests.
I remember Milton making interesting experiment in which he gave suggestion to a woman that next time when she'll see him and IF it was safe, she would go into deep trance. I don't know exact number but as I remember he met her in many many years and the suggestion was still there and she acted upon it.
Now if Milton gave himself the same suggestion and met the person, to which the response was anchored, after years in which he has consciously long since forgotten about the experiment, would it work?
Conscious forgetting isnt unconscious forgetting.
Would you say the woman had consciously forgotten?
Use your brain.

Simon, I have used self hypnosis for many years, simply because I have great difficulty in having others use it on. I find myself constantly watching and critiquing their methods and ability to form suggestions in spite of wishing to cooperate with them. I accept however the wonderful power of my own mind, plus my own ability to form imaginative suggestions, and have developed ways to use it on myself which differ from those I would use on a client. Now I may well be different from you for example, but I believe it proper to develop ones own method of self induction which bypasses the frills we don;t need, and cuts to the chase right away... I can do this visually, auditarily, by the written and the spoken word, and even in sleep, and it works for me. I have no idea what would happen if YOU used it, but it's worth trying..... Fact is, I believe this works for all of us regardless of our skills, simply because we constantly use self hypnosis without concious knowledge. Being skilled however does give us a boost, since we conciously act instead of doing it subconciously, and therefor obtain controlled results. Ever had a problem you were unable to solve, and decided to "sleep on it"? Amazing how often the solution becomes evident when you wake up isn't it? Would you doubt that this is self hypnosis? If not you will not be likely to agree with me, but if so, it seems so obvious.

How 'bout: You can remember everything unconsciously and forget everything consciously as you can forget everything consciously and remember everything subconsciously, ad infinitum. In other words, don't worry about it. You are thinking too much! Hugs, Pood

Skip, your response made me think more then one would expect :)
Terry, thanks for thoughtful answer, and I do agree with you
Poodle, as always, you make your answer crystal clear. I love it :)
And now here I am, with even more questions.
But doesn't every good answer make you go even deeper and thirst for more?

How deep Simon depends on how deep YOU want to go. I'll always remember being the class demo on TLT. We were in trance for the whole training and by the time we got to TLT it was pretty deep. All the instructor did was put his hand on my shoulder and I was in deep trance being a little cherub angel floating above my time line. That was FUN! Wish we could get stuck in trance!!
