I was wondering if you quickly touch on a few key areas to consider when searching for a good & reputable hypnotist. Are there any tell-tale signs to help someone feel more secure about choosing one over another? Maybe something in their adverstisement or website or initial contacts? Is it okay to inquire about their training or is that disrespectful? Thanks.

Ask them as many questions as you can.
Check my FAQ to get an idea of basic hypnosis.

First, as usual, I definitely agree with Merlin.

Second, I think you should ask anyone about their training and experience--doctors, dentists, hypnotherapists, psychologists, teachers, mechanics. After all, you're hiring them. If you were going to hire a nanny to take care of your children, wouldn't you inquire about their training? If any of them object, I'd suggest finding someone else.

Things to ask:
1) What training do you have?
2) How long have you been in practice?
3) Have you treated clients with XXXXXX (why you are seeking hypnotherapy)?
4) What happens in a hypnotic session?
5) Can someone be there with me?
6) How does hypnosis work?
7) Can I be hypnotized?
8) How many sessions will I need?
9) How much do you charge?
10) Is hypnosis recognized as effective by the government?
11) Will you make me do anything I don't want to do?

If there are any other questions you have, be sure to ask them, too.

Hi Soul,

Please know there are interesting differences between what you might call Merlinean-hypnosis, and Ericksonean-hypnosis. The former, obviously, both pre- as well as post- dating the other method. Either can get you results, depending on what you may be after.

Yet, with the former, maps you may not have considered before, let alone dared to think "possible ?", may well ... :)

and re Don's " Things to ask ":
1) What training do you have?
how many relevant
Certificates, Registrations &/or License papers do you want to see ? more than 9 ?

2) How long have you been in practice?
well,
whatever answer you are provided,
make sure also mentioned is ALL of life being "1 big, especially joyful, Practice", right ? :)
Imagine considering this a *pre-requisite* to their other Practice

3) Have you treated clients with XXXXXX (why you are seeking hypnotherapy)?
Very important : Just like
you wouldn't want a Nutritionist, or a Drug-counselor, to Surgically repair your skull ... likewise,
you do not want a "Lose weight" or a "Stop smoking" therapist, to Guide your self-Healing from anything like diabetes, or other chronically paining dis-eases & ill-ness conditions.

4) What happens in a hypnotic session?
5) Can someone be there with me?
6) How does hypnosis work?
7) Can I be hypnotized?
Info
like these 4, and much more, *should* be a part of their " Pre-talk " where you can take the opportunity of being assured in having your questions answered. As well, in this session, you should be invited to experience the opportunity of just how Easily-wonderful every person can feel being hypnotized.

This is no joke : Students, actually, want :) to *stay* in some of these wonderful states they can experience. Yes, but you know, they can't camp out in our school past each day's Closing time, lol

8) How many sessions will I need?
depends
on factors like : What do you want to Learn ?
The kewl thing about Life-skills being that once learned, you can enjoy them for Life.
Often, issues/learnings you can re-classify as success in less than, conservatively, 5 sessions.
Some take a bit longer

9) How much do you charge?
Ask for
"Full disclosure" about this as well.

10) Is hypnosis recognized as effective by the government?
hm,
may we re-state this question more Accurately ? (ooops)

11) Will you make me do anything I don't want to do?
You are always *at Choice* ! :)

Annie,

What specifically did you intend for Soul to understand from that?

No reputable practitioner will resent being asked questions. In fact, just the reverse... Questions indicate the client is keenly interested in getting results, and will cooperate with their practitioner once they are satified with the answers they get. Most of us will ensure that the client is comfortable about what we can do for them before we start, so if you don't ask us, we will tell you what we feel you need to know ahead of time. Therefor, to ask us first is not insulting, but pleasing. Feel free, and if you are not comfortable with the replies you get, look elsewere. Terry
