Hi everyone,
I am doing a little research into hypnosis before i pick a practhioner in my area and was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice.
From about the age of 18 on (i am 29 now) i have had feelings of anxiety, melancholy, and general deppresion. My gp refered me to a number of people with little success. Medication is very hit and miss, infact hasnt helped at all.

The reason I want to try hypnosis is that my childhood memories are very vague to me...nearlly to the point where i cannot recall it. I cannot help but think that this has some bearing upon my deppresion.

I was wondering can all hypnotherapists regress patients, is it safe, can the practice worsen a persons symptoms. Finally should i chose someone who is also a trained pyschotherapist.

I woud appreciate some help from anyone in the know out there.

THanks
Pat.

I was wondering can all hypnotherapists regress patients,
NO.

is it safe,
Generally, yes.
But what do you mean by safe?
can the practice worsen a persons symptoms.
Yes, they could.
But I can't imagine why they'd want to.

Finally should i chose someone who is also a trained pyschotherapist.
Only if you want psychotherapy.
They are different disciplines.

The reason I want to try hypnosis is that my childhood memories are very vague to me...nearlly to the point where i cannot recall it. I cannot help but think that this has some bearing upon my deppresion.
Do you want to explore childhood memories or to overcome the "feelings of anxiety, melancholy, and general deppresion"?
They may not be related.

You can do either/both.
But you should choose one or the other.

Depending upon the country in which you live, you will need a referral from your physician since you were on medications and had seen this person previously for the same problem. In the USA none of us would be able to help you with your problems without that written referral. Please know the laws in your country. I believe it may be quite different in the UK.

I don't remember much of my childhood before the age of 5 either but so what? I really don't care. I know I was loved, fed , clothed and well taken care of so not more to need IMHO. I can't imagine why anything would change from 0-5 than from 5 on in my life.

It really could have nothing to do with your childhood and everything to do with an idea that managed to slip into your unconscious mind while you were at any age. Ideas can slip in from misinterpreting something on TV or what someone said, did or many other sources.

Just make sure that when you choose your hypnotist that s/he is trained to deal with "abreactions" -- that is if a really super bad memory comes up that distresses you completely while in trance.

Good luck on your decision.

You say you are doing "a little research", but it really must be very little since you ask a question that is constantly being asked on this board, and you have obviously not read it yourself. You should know that the best of us have no time for those who self diagnose... If you want the best, be prepared to treat them as such. Ask questions, but don't ever demand a certain course of treatment, it shows disrespect.
