Genetic

Dear Merlin,
Your reply to the genetic association to hypnosis was rather incomprehensive and maybe cynical.
“Genetic?
I suppose so.
It is the genes that separates you from your chair.”
As an expert on the subject, what percentage of the population is hypnotizable? This question has eluded me for the past 50 years.
Thanx

I was saying we/you are human, not a chair, because of your genes.
100% are hypnotisable!
They may not be hypnotisable by a given hypnotist. The particular hypnotist may not have the skill or flexability, but everyone can be hypnotised.

She with the most flexability wins :)
You should see how flexible my girlfriend is (hint: she teaches yoga).

Not everyone can be hypnotised by an hypnotist.
Some people are already hypnotised. It is their normal state.
Some people are brain damaged and cannot be hypnotised.
Some people refuse to be hypnotised.

I wonder if it is harder to hypnotise skilled hypnotist, regarding that hypnotists know whats going on and might have a different point of view upon it

You have just made a presupposition. It is not valid. Skilled hypnotists know beyond all certainty how wonderful the trance state is and will allow it. Say we use induction A on a client 100 times. This client knows what's going to happen but it happens anyway. In fact, the more often a person is hypnotized, the easier it becomes. I am of the belief that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis and the person doing the hypnotizing is only a highly trained guide. Once the mind has an "experience", it is easy to recall that experience. I have "hypnotized myself in a dream and went into trance". The induction I used doesn't exist but my mind knew the trance state and went there anyway. Pretty kewl, huh?

Kewl indeed
Is it same with trance inductions? Eg the allmighty milton handshake? Would it work on someone that knows "the catch" and whats going on?

Worked for all of us when practising at an HSA meeting, and we all knew what to expect. We just decided it should work for us I guess. "Expectation" so to speak, plus cooperation.....
Thats the trick, Simon: deciding if you want it to work, or not. If you decide you do not, then it will not.
