Tonight I sat down with my copy of Richard Bandler's book "Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-formation". This was one of the books that, when I was first getting into hypnosis, was recommended to me.

That was years ago. I tried over and over to finish it but never could. Now that I'm looking at it again I understand why.

It's not a hypnosis book. It's an NLP book.

Here I was, hoping to learn about inductions and how to guide people in and out of hypnotic states. Instead I get a lot of double-talk about how cool and innovative Richard thinks he is, and a bunch of NLP.

Don't get me wrong. The NLP stuff is great and useful, but it isn't hypnosis.

I'll keep the book because the Appendix has some great summaries of Eriksonian language patterns, but it's just no wonder I was so frustrated!

The book is on hypnosis or at least as we term hypnosis -- Chapter 9 Altered States , Hypnosis

14 is ADVANCED hypnosis in that it deals with Pattern Interrupts, Nested Loops and Stacked Realities.

I saw Inductions in the book too. There is a very fine line between hypnosis and NLP and speaking for Connie, myself and Skip, it is our blurred realities. NLP is High Tech Hypnosis.

Learning some basic NLP to help you become a great hypnotist is not going to hurt you in the least and will only help you.

If you don't like this one, go back to the original TRANCE-formations by B&G. You can find it used only on Amazon or equiv. A really good copy was going for about $145.00.

What do you expect the 'World's Best Hypnotist' to call himself? He does it so elegantly. Our Skip here is just about that elegant too. You have never been hypnotized until you have been 'Bandlerized" (a word Connie made up).

Read and learn. It gets much, much better. I promise. You may also come to realize the genius of the man.

Enjoy~Pood

What people who "do NLP" don't always seem to realize is that it IS hypnosis. Through and through.

I, a licensed Master Prac, at the time did not realize NLP is hypnosis. I ordered one certain DVD from Omni and Jerry said something that made my mind go 'OHHHHHHHHHHH!!'. Mind you, Jerry doesn't believe in NLP but when I saw on that video how hypnosis is NLP and NLP is hypnosis that was all it took. Strange how one can learn an important lesson from a person that doesn't know it or teach it. It's all about one certain little word and we were very good at 'doing' that word when children. ;)

Stay well~Pood

I prefer to look at NLP as a superset of Hypnosis. That is, if you drew a big circle and named it NLP, and within that big circle drew a smaller circle named hypnosis, you'd have a visual representation of their interrelationship.

YMMV

I think I was just so frustrated when I wrote that post that I told myself the issue was NLP vs Hypnosis when it really wasn't.

My real frustration was with the style of the book, not the content.

I had a huge rant about this written, which I've just deleted. I'll just say this: I kept feeling like I wasn't learning anything with this book, and gave up on learning hypnosis at all for a long, long time before I worked up the courage to try again with someone else's approach.

Story-based learning isn't my style, that's all. I'm not a big subscriber of the "confusion leads to enlightenment" theory either. Just give me the facts and procedures in plain English, please.

Confusion most certainly is a fabulous state because if you were not confused you would never look for a solution or attempt to learn more.

Skip the beginning NLP parts of the freaking book, read the hypnosis parts and learn them. They are there and they are good. Money not wasted or in the alternative put the book up on Amazon or equiv. It will sell.

and/or

buy the old book which is written in a totally different style that you will most probably like.....very non-NLP.

I had not even figured this out yet in class and my partner said: They just sorta 'fall' into trance, don't cha think? I thought: NO!!!!!!!! Then a couple of months after training I saw the video that took me to understanding. Ohhh yeah.

Yes, Don -- I LOVE your idea as usual.

We have other hypnosis books listed on Merlin's FAQ. Have you looked and you can ask us if they contain NLP and we will truthfully answer you. A good one for you right now that contains NO NLP is Tad James' HYPNOSIS: A Comprehensive Guide which takes you through the styles of three different hypnotists - Elman, Erickson and Estabrooks. You can probably get it cheaper from the owner of this site if he still has it in stock.

See... I hear that and I think: "No, look, I'm here because I'm already looking for new answers. I'm already open, I'm already curious, I'm already feeling creative. So you're confusing me for no reason, and it's uncomfortable. Please stop it."

Where is Merlin's FAQ? I've looked everywhere... well, except for the place it's kept, apparently...

Look for any post Merlin has made. Toward the bottom in the signature line you'll find the links to 'her' page where the FAQs are and the hypnosis booklist and Skip's NLP booklist.

Remember to ask before you buy.

You can also go up to the solid color above a thread and see:: User CP, FAQ, Members List (it's alphabetical so go to the M's and find Merlin). Same as finding a post.

Sorry to tease you and I am really glad that you are interested in our world. Welcome to it. I hope the book(s) then lead you to an in-person training with lots of practice on and with other students while the instructor keeps watch to make sure all goes well.

Enjoy~Pood :pood:

Found it by going through the Members List. What terrible color decisions on that page... but thanks for the tip!

I see Dave Elman's book is listed there, as well as something from Gerald Kein who I've always found to be real practical and down-to-Earth.

I recently got my hands on a copy of Dave Elman's book (a bit of an adventure getting it, a story for another day...) but have yet to do much other than read the table of contents. It seems very promising and sincere.

"What terrible color decisions on that page... but thanks for the tip!"

I LOVED it so much I asked Merlin how she did it so I could build my websites the exact same way. Maybe it's strictly a redhead thing, suppose?

Interesting color comment on your part. We have never, ever, had that before.

Enjoy reading~Pood :pood:

Uh-oh maybe I'm looking at the wrong thing... it's the black page with the yellow writing on it, right?

lots of colors used and yes, the background is black so the colors stand out.
