Genetic

Hi,

According to the latest hypothesis by researchers in Israel, hypnosis is genetic. Is there other research to corroborate these findings? That is is hypnosis genetic?

You can read about it here:

But here is the result of her "original" research:
"'Most exciting,' she said, 'was that these individuals, once they learned hypnotic analgesia techniques in the lab, were able to transfer the learned ability to help control their own back pain. Their psychological wellbeing went up and their depression and levels of pain went down.' "

I learned that in my first introductory class on hypnosis!

If she is having problems getting people into the somnambulistic state, maybe she should try other inductions with deepeners.

It did not appear that Eisdale had any problems in this area with his patients. You know how they used to do the tests. They would put a live person in a chair with a hypnotic induction on a tape recorder in another chair and "grade" them as to how well they went into trance. Doesn't seem like much of a fair test to me! Grrrrrrr! Pood

Genetic?
I suppose so.
It is the genes that separates you from your chair.

Thanks a lot for the link Don, quick and interesting read. I think that there may be some genetic contribution to hypnotizability at a general level. Though, I think that practice and/or training are be able to get rid of any "genetic handicap" that may exist. I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter Don.

I see no valid proof that genetics has anything to do with hypnotisability, and choose not to believe it. I suspect our contributor is looking for a reason for failures, while I would have requested a rematch, and used a different method of induction.... When raport exists, hypnosis is never far behind. I have been challenged many times, and never lost the bet even with the most resistant subject. If genetics was a factor, surely I would have found at least one I couldn't induce? Besides this is NOT by any stretch a research activity, since it is not open to the challenge of other skilled practitioners doing the same test.
