I have posted here in the past and have gotten good feedback! thank you! I have a hypnotherapist I have been working with for 2 years- mostly relaxation for panic issues. During the last session he had me go back into my childhood while hypnotized. I have no problem with the way he did this or with him at all. My reaction scares me!! I saw myself as a young child and suddenly had severe pain in the back of my neck which then spread to my head over my eye. I began to feel nausea
really intense. I then traveled back to my safe place in my mind-------- he did not have time to explain the pain to me he just said I would be OK and to remember I am safe now! Until next appointment.....
was I having a heart attack??? a panic attack??? or what was going on??? should I continue to do this?
Please respond! Millie

We were not there and we do not know what was said. I would guess that you had what was called an "abreaction" which can often happen in cases of regression. Some hypnotists are very skilled with it and some are not. I certainly would discuss with your hypnotist what happened and ask not to be regressed to that point again. Not everything in the world has to be a drag it out by the roots therapy. I have clients I would not dream of doing regression on because of the interview before trance. Please ask him/her to do something different with you next time.

As for your heart, maybe you should check with your friendly doctor just to cover all the bases. Panic attacks often feel like heart attacks. MD's can't tell the difference until they hook a person up to a machine.

Good luck! Pood

Hello Millie,

Often, childhood regression triggers all sorts of feelings and these feelings can be very intense because you are experiencing them as a child, without the understanding that an adult might have.

The usual routine is to desensitise the feelings by returning to them and the event memory that caused them, as an adult, with all the experience and knowledge you have gained. If you don't feel you want to return to the same feelings then ask your therapist to find another way to release these emotions.

There are basically two major ways to view the past:
1) Reliving it (seeing it through your eyes)
2) Watching it (observing from the position of another person)

The #2 method is safer (if done properly) because you don't feel the emotions. The #1 can bring out the emotions and, as such, is a method frequently employed by psychologists and psychiatrists who want to get that type of response (called an "abreaction").

What you experienced is a normal reaction (or abreaction) to events that your conscious has forgotten, but your unconscious not only remembers, but probably manifests in ways that have nothing to do with the actual cause!

Tell your hypnotist your concerns.

:) Thanks once again for your helpful responses!! I will talk to my doctor next visit in 2 weeks but wondered what had happened to me. Is there any books or articles I can read about this that you suggest? Thanks again! Millie

If you look through Skip's posts he has a good library listed from which to choose.
