this may seem liek a strange question and possibly one with no answer but...
....before giving a hypnotherapy session it is always good to give a free initial breifing and analysis of the client.
But what sort of questions would you ask? ofcourse every client and problem will have different questions but other than the legal stuff and contact/medical details etc are there any things you would ask every client?
in all the hypnosis etc training i have come across they never give examples of the initial briefing just mention it, i would liek to see recordings of initial breifings if anyone knows where i can get hold of copies.

I always offer a free consultation so I can learn more about the persons situaiton and problem and then I can suggest the best approach for them - so Breakthrough, Coaching, Phobia work etc
WGM, in every basic training I've taken--and I've taken several--the trainers have gone into this in detail. I'm sorry that you got bad training in this area.
We're not really set up to train you in this forum. Basically, you want to dispel misconceptions, "test" for suggestibility, establish rapport, find out what the client is looking for and their motivation, and discover what new behaviors they want to replace the old ones.
It's a lot more complex than that, however, and I would suggest getting trained in that area. You also might try looking for a tape such as:

thankyou, will definatly get that sometime,.
As for suggestibility tests well, lets just say in the dvd training course i did a different approach to them was made i think, i was taught to mainly use them to make the person accustomed to doing what you say i.e stand up if you thought of .....
I understand my hypnosis trainign is quite different to the conventional but i am doing a 10 dvd trade with a hypnotist so i will get some more conventional views aswell on dvd ontop of the ebooks i already have read

Hi
I'm also training and my trainer always emphasises the importance of the initial consultation.
From what I've learned so far, if there is any physical pain present - ensure the client gets a referral letter from his GP, as otherwise you could end up treating something that is a warning sign of a deeper problem.
He's also told us to be on the look out for psychosis, since we are unable to treat this.
One more tip was to differentiate between depression (treatable) and bipolar disorder (untreatable) by asking lots of questions about the client's depression and checking to see whether there is a mania phase, coupled with a very high sex drive.
Finally, it's also a good opportunity to check if the client is there because he/she wants to be, or whether they have been cohersed by a relative, friend, etc.
Hope this helps :)

"One more tip was to differentiate between depression (treatable) and bipolar disorder (untreatable) by asking lots of questions about the client's depression and checking to see whether there is a mania phase, coupled with a very high sex drive" was posted here.
In the U.S. both depression and bipolar disorder can only be diagnosed
and treated by licensed mental and medical health professionals.
Anyone else doing so, would be subject to imprisonment. As for
your reference to "a very high sex drive," -- nonsense.

I like DVD courses and have many myself. However, I would respectfully suggest that in-person, live training is also important.
Yes, what you mentioned is one reason for suggestibility tests. However there are several other purposes:
1) Shows you know what you are doing and makes your suggestions more easily acceptable
2) Shows the client how easy they are to be hypnotized, making induction easier
3) Familiarizes client with some tests so they can more easily be used as convincers
4) The hypnotherapy was already in progress by the time you said "hello." These help to deepen the trance and suggestions even before the formal induction
Any others, people?

Every training I've been to goes over this subject in great detail.
I would suggest that you contact your trainer.

The hypnotherapy was already in place when answering the phone or in my case let the answering machine get it as it is recorded. Even after the intake and pre-induction talk with imbedded suggestions they are invited to go to the chair where 100's of people have _____________. Sort of like Erickson saying: "Would you like to go into trance now or later?" Pood
