When I was in vo-ag the teacher showed how you can hypnotise a chicken by holding the chickens head to the ground and running your fingers back in forth in front of it. How does that work?

A chicken can be hypnotized, or put into a trance by holding its head down against the ground, and continuously drawing a line along the ground with a stick or a finger, starting at its beak and extending straight outward in front of the chicken. If the chicken is hypnotized in this manner, it will remain immobile for somewhere between 15 seconds to 30 minutes, continuing to stare at the line.
This technique is useful for farmers who need to slaughter a chicken and do not have help immediately available. It is also useful in feeding large pet reptiles who are too slow to catch a moving chicken.
The first known written reference for this method came in 1646, in Mirabile Experimentum de Imaginatione Gallinae by Athanasius Kircher.
H B Gibson, in his book Hypnosis - its Nature and Therapeutic Uses, states that the record period for a chicken remaining in hypnosis is 3 hours 47 minutes.

Billy,
More accurately, it's a fixation method (captivation of attention), rather
than hypnosis, but it is "cool."
I once hypnotized a chicken to show off in front of a bunch of farmers.
The hypnosis part went great, but unfortunately all I was able to do was get it to act like a chicken.
They werent impressed.
So my question for all you chicken hypnotizers out there, "What have you been able to accomplish with them in the trance state?"

But Skip, this is only for those who are too chicken to hypnotise other people isn't it? (EG)....

Are hypnotized chickens more tasty than "regular" chickens? Now THAT would be worth something! :)

Are hypnotized chickens more tasty than "regular" chickens? Now THAT would be worth something! :) Interesting point. If a deer or other wild creature is shot, and doesn't die immediately, or is shot on the run, there is a wild taste to the meat. Wereas if the death is instant, and the creature relaxed not knowing what is about to happen, that taste is no present. Perhaps then, a hypnotised chicken does indeed taste better! There you go, the things you learn on this board (G)....
Well I suppose we now know why YOU hypnotize chickens.
:)
