View Full Version : My conscious mind told me it didn't exist

Hi. This post is inspired by a blog posting I honestly found dumbfounding - a denial of an unconscious mind, what a famous trainer said (on another forum, not sure if that is "the other forum") was a limiting concept (unconscious). If I could veto any misunderstanding from my part I get the metaphor for what it is and that no such distinction exists. Apart from the amazement that people don't/didn't get it (from the comments following the blog) is it not easier to question the purpose of a conscious mind rather than argue against an unconscious one? I mean, is it not the "conscious" part that causes the most trouble for people in the first place? Dunno, what do you think?

It is true it doesnt exist. Neither does the conscious mind.

In the sense that one is separate from the other.

It is all one mind.

We use the distinctions conscious/unconscious to differentiate between what we are attending to and what we are not attanding to.

And since we can only attend to 7 +/- 2 things at once, whenever something grabs our attention it bumps something else out.

To say that one thing is in our unconscious and another is in our conscious is conceptually correct but in an instant because our focus shifts, it can be incorrect.

So conscious and unconscious are constructs we use to make it possible to discuss things, but they arent a very accurate reflection of reality. And to believe that one defines qualities or limitations that the other doesnt posess is a serious mistake.

Does that help?

We define hypnosis as the by-pass of the conscious mind. The conscious mind serves a great purpose in our lives -- it filters out a lot of junk and cra* so it doesn't enter our UC mind. Merlin has written a nice little FAQ that you may wish to read. I can consciously be doing one thing like right now while my UC mind is attending to all that needs to be done in my body.

As Merlin and I found out a few years ago, we cannot consciously raise our arms -- it's a little over 130 separate little muscles in there that all work together to achieve that which we consciously desire. We can learn to do something consciously and by doing and doing and doing, it goes into the realm of the UC mind.

We have ONE BRAIN and for our work, it is sooo very easy to call the brain a MIND and divide that MIND into two parts.

MRI's have been taken of human brains while in hypnosis and it is a small area that gets very, very active.

As Skip wrote 7+/-2 bits of anything at a time and most of that is visual.

Be well~Pood

And to add to the confusion.

The mind does not exist either.

Only humans would claim something is real that can't be found, can't be seen and is invisible.

It can be a useful model and yet that is all it can be as the old saying that where there is smoke there is fire is only accurate when one can actually give evidence (external picture and sound = feeling) of the fire.

Here's a new twist for you that is totally true and verifiable. When we humans have surgery, our conscious mind is waaaayyy GONE. We do, however, hear what the surgeons are talking about. Sometimes one may refer to something "not making it". This can be interpreted various ways without the conscious mind to safe guard us. Quite often this is the beginning of a very large problem for the patient. Misunderstanding so patient thinks s/he will die soon so goes out for the 'last blasts' and unhealthy fun. We have another client walking through our doors. Surgeons need to learn to keep their mouths shut in surgery or the patient to be needs to come to us first so the UC mind will ignore any unhealthy comments made by anyone.

There are many true stories written about this in some of our books.
How's that fit on the 'other place'?

Be well~Pood :pood:

If it existed at all at all...

Fills in the gaps...

Doesn't delete, distort, generalise...

Just fills the gaps...

The UC mind can and certainly does distort and create fantasy where none existed. 'tis a clever little place/thing that may or may not give up secrets easily. How would one explain that Pood was in somnam. and was a cherub angel flapping her tiny wings with absolutely ZERO suggestion (in her own mind, of course). How would one explain 'confabulation' without distortion OR do we have two different definitions of 'distortion".

Woof~:)

With different frames of reference certainly conjures up some ideas...
