Hi all, I am 4 months into my hypnotherapist course and find relaxing quite difficult to go into a deeper state. Without giving too much away, have you any tips for me to not perhaps concentrate quite so hard. dave
It sounds to me like your talking about self-hypnosis. In spite of the books, the truth is, unless a person is familiar with the experience of hypnosis, using self-hypnosis to reach a deep state can be difficult. However, many hypnotists would contend that a deep state is not necessary for successful hypnotherapy.
My guess, therefore, is that your course is via mail or the internet, yes?
If so, is there a particular reason you feel you need to go deeper?
And just out of interest sake, is there a reason you're not asking this of your course instructor?

No it isn't.

I would like to get some sense of a trance like state. I don't feel that it is happening at all. I have been told "some people deny having been in trance". Just a little proof that I have would be nice. I daydream like everyone else and find it difficult to have faith in a lack of evidence.
And just out of interest sake, is there a reason you're not asking this of your course instructor?
I have and was told to "stop trying so hard" or perhaps confusional or boring inductions might work better. I have no problems putting someone else into trance so my question was really- how do I know when I am in trance?

This may sound like swift judgement, but if I were four months into a hypnotherapast course and hadnt yet experienced hypnosis, I would lose confidence in the trainer.

hi hypnobrit.
you want to know what it's like to be in Hypnosis or trance ? There's a difference between the two as to the level that you goto. What you feel when under for both of trance or hypnosis, is subjective and personal to each and every person.
My opinion is that since you are on a training course, you are a prime candidate for a subject who has difficulty believing that they have been under Hypnosis. In real life you will have clients like this, why not give your fellow students the chance to get their skills up and practice.
If you know what the exterior signs of hypnosis are, then I would get someone to video tape the sessions that you are being put under, so you can see for yourself your own hypnotic signs.
Also if your course trainer is smart enough, he would have given you a post hypnotic suggestion... something along the lines of
" ..... and you have been wonderful this session and you can NOW PUT YOUR HAND UP TO FACE the future..." and when you come round your hand is at your face.

Thackaray Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I aim to stick with it and see what happens. From what I have seen so far, Hypnosis is a wonderful life skill that everyone should learn for themselves if not for helping others. I believe that I spend so much time daydreaming normally that when it comes to hypnosis, I don't notice the difference. I have read that the more practice the easier it gets and that is where I am headed now.
Thanks for all your posts. Great site by the way.

The answer seems simple enough to me. Your instuctor is failing you, and if he is incapable of putting you into a trance you are entitled to a refund. I would never take a students money if I was incapable of hypnotising them.....
Hello Hypnobrit,
I would disagree that trance and hypnosis are not the same thing. They are in my experience.
That aside, everyone experiences an hypnotic trance in a way unique to them. Your point about daydreaming is valid and I suggest that you do a lot more of it.;)
Good luck with your course.

Relaxation has nothing to do with hypnosis.
If you don't experience hypnosis by day 2, I'd say you're in need of a refund.

Actually I experienced this same problem about one week into my training as I was quite convinced that I could not be hypnotized. One of the people there had taken the course before so I asked him if he would just experiment a little for me and we did the "close your eyes and one hand is full of books and the other balloons" and also "the vise getting tighter pulling the fingers together". When I opened my eyes both times one hand was waaaaayyyyy above the other and the next time my index fingers were glued together so from that tiny little bit of help I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that it could happen and it did happen quite often. So, if you are in school, have a fellow classmate hypnotise you and tell you that you hand has a message for your face and that your face really wants to receive that message from your hand. What the message is only you will know. Suggest getting closer and closer just like a rubberband pulling on them. When hand is at face it is STUCK there! Then you will indeed know that you have been in a pretty deep trance. A trance is usually different for everyone and not all people have the same trance experience at each session. I know I don't. I only have had one client that experiences trance exactly every time the same. Don't give up yet, just play around a little bit until you find yourself or even if you have to ask your instructor to work with you. It is why you are paying out the money, NO????
