Dear Sir
Would you be in favour of self hypnosis cd's for general personal development?
Can one be hypnotised into assimilating these cd's more effectively?
Thank you

This was for your Don but you will find the answer in Merlin's FAQ. Find any post by Merlin or search members for Merlin and click on the post. At the bottom is a FAQ and our recommended reading list.
The chances of a CD or MP3 working are slim to none because you are a very unique and special person and there is no one in the whole world just like you and that means you have your own reasons for doing or not doing something which includes self-improvement.
Hopefully, in the future, you will be able to take a NLP Training in person and you will find lots and lots of self-imprvement together with lots and lots of other skills.
There was a recent show on television of where you live. It was out in the country. The man who is a retired Game Warden and his wife have a "baby" hippo and that hippo sleeps on a nice soft bed on the floor in their home. The "baby" hippo isn't such a baby now and she goes to visit other hippos but always comes home at night to a good meal and her nice soft bed. Perhaps you don't have hypnotists or NLPers but you do have a beautiful and wonderous country.
Be well~Pood
When I was very young, I read lots of comic books and humor magazines (like Mad Magazine) and magazines about monster movies. I asked my mother if she ever got upset that I wasn't reading classic books. She said "Not at all" for two reasons. First, she didn't care what I read as long as I read. Second, she said that eventually I'd tire of only reading popular stuff and eventually start reading classics.
The one thing she didn't say, because it was self-evident, was that there was one thing I had to do before I could read anything at all: I initially had to learn how to read!
I have consistently said that I am in favor of people studying with books and CDs and DVDs and on-line podcasts, videos, etc. as part of a complete system which includes n-person training. Recently, I've posted reviews of some DVDs I've studied. I'm about to start studying a book/DVD combination called Reality is Plastic. This weekend I'm taking a training focusing on street hypnosis. I try to walk my talk.
To be more explicit, I am in favor of self-hypnosis CDs for general personal development.
However, my guess is that you mean buying a CD that claims to do something and listening to it, which wold actually make it hetero-hypnosis and not self-hypnosis.
But let's assume that you mean that you would make your own CD and listen to it which is one category of self-hypnosis (the other would be to hypnotize yourself in real time with no outside assistance).
Yes, I'm in favor of those types of CDs with two provisos:
First, you have to learn how to "read." In this case, "read" is a metaphor for one of two things: First, if you're making your own CDs, you have to learn how to induce hypnosis. Second, no matter what type of CD you use, you have to know what being hypnotized is like for you.
We often get posts from people saying something like, "I listen to CDs and I get relaxed." Hypnosis isn't relaxation, although they frequently accompany each other. So I suggest that before listening to such CDs a person should actually be hypnotized by someone who knows what they're doing. This has two benefits for you. First, you'll know whether you're hypnotized when you listen to the CDs--you have something to compare your experience with. Second, the more you experience hypnosis, the easier it is to be hypnotized. Being hypnotized first can only be beneficial.
The second proviso is that I feel it's important to understand that each person is a unique individual. General suggestions for "personal development" on some CD purchased off of eBay or from a website, or even one you make for yourself if you don't understand how to design suggestions, may have no effect whatsoever on you.
So you may be lucky and have the suggestions on the CD meet your needs. However, it's far more likely (from a purchased CD or on a CD you make if you're untrained) that you'll not have success. We often get posts from people saying "I tried several hypnosis CDs [or DVDs or MP3s, etc.] and none of them worked. I guess hypnosis doesn't work for me." Of course, that's wrong. Hypnosis works for everyone capable of making a post here if the person is hypnotized and if the suggestions are specific and appropriate to the individual. If not, you're just wasting your time.
The unfortunate side-effect of buying hypnosis "programs" is that for every person who finds success with them, there is at least one person who gets turned off to hypnosis even though, if they had gone to a professional, they would have achieved rapid success.
So there are possibilities and pitfalls to using self-hypnosis CDs. As is traditional in capitalistic business, caveat emptor (let the buyer beware). "Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances."
Just as I strongly urge the use of books and recorded media such as CDs as a complement to real training, I also think that in most cases you will have greater luck using self-hypnosis CDs as part of a comprehensive hypnotherapeutic program that includes work with a trained and experienced hypnotist. They may work on their own, but I certainly couldn't guarantee it.
Finally, yes, you can be hypnotized into assimilating the suggestions on CDs more effectively. In fact, when I make specific recordings for clients, I include suggestions that the client will go into trance more easily when listening to the recording in the future, and they will accept the suggestions thoroughly and completely. I put the suggestions to assimilate what is on the recording more easily right on the recording.
