Hi there everyone, This is a quick intro - I'm Dan, aged 27, and I'm joining here to improve my health through hypnosis. I had a heart operation last November and have been plagued by fast and irregular heartrate issues ever since. I have been told there is potentially little can be done with drugs / further medical procedures but I'm not willing to accept a life on the sofa - I want a normal and active life, so I am starting to practice and learn some self hypnosis techniques. One I have just started and feel the benefit of while I do it is to listen to the sound of a clock ticking (60 beats per minute) and try and "go into my body", experience a feeling of body awareness, and try to lower and align the clock with my heartrate.. I have an over active mind and find it difficult to concentrate on just one thing and often my mind wanders. I plan on reading up around self hypnosis techniques generally over the next few weeks and months, however I was hoping someone might point me to some good reading about increasing "body awareness" / "going into the body" / "shifting your awareness to an area of the body" ???... if not then even just "relaxing the mind for hypnosis" ? In fact if anyone has any information on hypnosis and the heart I would LOVE to read it, so far I've only found bits and pieces, but I've only just started looking and just begun with this clock method... I hope this is the start of something good, and hope to meet you all over the next few weeks. I will report my results and progress, and who knows, maybe I can return the karma and help others in the future? :) Dan
Hi, Dan, and welcome.
Congratulations on making it through the surgery and on your recovery. I hope it continues well. I obviously know nothing about your case, but just from what you've written, I would think that an implantable pacemaker might have been suggested. Obviously, there are some other issues here.
What you described, listening to a clock and trying to align your heartrate to that speed, if it works and if you have your doctor's permission to try it, sounds like a great idea to me. It's not hypnosis per se, but that doesn't mean it won't work for you. If it does, that's really great!
Is it possible that hypnosis can help you? From what I've seen and done with hypnosis, I believe that, given what you've described, it absolutely can help you.
But now I have to ask you some questions.
1) Did you supply the anesthesia on yourself, and while unconscious, did you also monitor all of your vitals to continue giving you the right amount of anesthesia?
2) Did you actually perform the surgery on yourself, using a scalpel to cut yourself open, physical or electrical clamps to seal off bleeding, repair the problem, and then close you up?
3) Did you act as a nurse, supplying the doctor with the tools that he or she needed?
My guess is that you'll answer all of these questions, "Of course not." In fact, I'll bet your thinking, "Don, don't be foolish. I'm not trained as a heart surgeon, an anesthesiologist, or as an OR nurse. I don't know how to do any of those things, and even if I did, I couldn't do them on myself."
Do you see where I'm going here?
Dan, I wish you all the success and luck in the world. At this point it's important to ask yourself a question: do you want to spend many months learning self-hypnosis, learning the proper way to give suggestions, hoping that you actually achieve a hypnotic trance and hoping the suggestions work? Again, My guess is that your answer is, "No, I want to achieve this right away!"
You had a surgeon, anesthesiologist and nurses who were experts. My suggestion to you, then, is this: Go to a professional. Got to a trained and experienced hypnotherapist who will quickly help you to achieve your goals. Wouldn't that be great? To really achieve what you desires in a few sessions rather than months or years?
Here is my guess as to what will happen:
First, you'll talk to a hypnotist, explain your hopes and fears. The hypnotists will explain to you what hypnosis is really about so you'll forget about all the myths you've heard. He or she will also tell you that they want to work with your physician and they'll need a referral from your doctor to work with you. In fact, your hypnotist may want to talk to your doctor to make sure of exactly what you need.
In that first session, your hypnotist will also lead you into a deep, hypnotic trance that will allow you to find rest and amazing relaxation. Why, they may even teach you how to get into that same state whenever you want it or need it!
Then, after you get the referral and your hypnotist discusses the case with your doctor, you'll start having wonderful, stress-relieving sessions with your hypnotist. Probably one a week. And I'll bet that within a month you and your doctor will begin to see positive changes in your life. You'll be off the sofa and leading a far more active life than you think you're currently condemned to live. Won't that be fantastic!
You know, your doctor may even know a hypnotist he or she can refer you to. If not, you can contact the National Guild of Hypnotists, the American Board of Hypnotherapy or the Association for Integrative Psychology. They'll be glad to recommend a hypnotherapist and/or NLP practitioner in your area.
Take a moment, close your eyes, and just imagine how good you'll feel when your life is more active than it is now and you feel normal again. Food will taste better. The air will feel cleaner. You'll feel like you're filled with energy. You'll know that you can go on to meet and even exceed your potential. Just bask in the glow of those feelings for a few minutes. Isn't it great?!
You're right. This can be the start of something good. No, that's not accurate. This can be the start of something absolutely amazing and life changing. I know that's what you want. All you have to do is go out and get it!

Don made a perfect post for you to follow.
You really, really need the medical referral and you need an experienced hypnotist. It is extremely easy for us to teach you to enter the wonderful realms of REAL self-hypnosis whenever you want and, perhaps, a CD could be made especially for you with what you want on it with your Drs.' approval. What you really want is not difficult for anyone with experience. As you continue to improve, perhaps another CD could be made.
We exist for a reason and the reasons go far, far beyond smoking cessation, weight management or stress. We spend thousands and thousands of dollars on trainings, books, DVD's etc. Just as your cardiac surgeon knew what s/he was doing, so do we working with the mind as the mind controls the body.
Find someone that understands and with whom you feel very comfortable and confident that what you want is completely achievable.
You are far, far too young to settle for less because if you settle for less, you get less than you settled for.
Be well~Pood :)
