Hi all,

I have a small conundrum that I'd like to figure out the "why" to. Are there any guidelines that would be helpful in communicating to a hypnotist what I'd like to achieve through hypnosis?

For example, several years ago I was working on a manuscript. As usual, I decided vast chunks of it were dreck and saved it to a "dump" file. I've learned never to dump those files because.. as usual, in going back after a three year hiatus, I've realized what i thought was dreck was actually pretty good. As Dr Frankenstein would say, it lives.

What I'd like to find out is why, when I'm actively working on something, I invalidate my work. Some of my dump files are larger than the manuscripts they came from. I used to think I had an overly critical editor inside my head but now I wonder if it's something else. I don't think it's writer's block; I can sit and write-- no problem.

Any guidelines would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd say you communicate pretty well. But if you're worried, print out your post and hand it to him or her. It says everything you need to start communicating.

Hi Rith2,

Seems as if you communicated this pretty well, the trick IMO would be to communicate moderation to the UC, OR a finer sense of disctinction.

I would choose the latter.

The trick would be to help the UC learn to distinguish ...

That way what does get thrown out has a better chance of actually being dreck and you get to keep has a better chance of being OK, with the understanding that it isnt infallable.

So using NLP I would get you to go back and recall several times when you had thrown something out that later turned out good and compare how you felt about them AT THE TIME YOU THREW THEM OUT. Each of them and compare the feelings and notice if there is a similarity.

I would ask you to do the same with several things that actually did turn out to be dreck, and notice if there is any similarity of feeling about them. (your feelings at the time not now)

Then compare the feelings you had about the dreck with the feelings you had about the non drek making sure it is the feelings you had at the time you were deciding to throw them out.

There will be a similarity in the feelings about the dreck, and a similarity about the non dreck that is distinctive from each other.

I would then ask your unconscious to use that feeling as a marker, an indicator, in the future (by future pacing) to help you make a finer distinction about what to keep and what to toss.

But understand Ruth, it will be better, but not fool proof. Because thru time your feelings, attitudes, beliefs, etc change and thus your responses.

I would also say, the bottom line is go ahead and trust your unconscious, what is dreck today most likely is dreck, irrepective of what it might be tomorrow.

And forget worrying about the volume.

I know a lady who writes. She goes into a trance for about six months, writing everything down. then she does what she calls her 'mother' and for the next year or two goes thru and RUTHlressly ;) delets 90% of what she wrote.

One book for her is about a three year process and the vast majority of what she writes is dreck.

Thank you, Don and Skip!

Don-- That's a great suggestion. I do communicate better on paper than I do verbally.

Skip-- Reading over your post made me realize that whatever I dump that has a strong emotional charge to it almost always ends up being "non-dreck". The stuff that really is bad has no emotional cahrge to it at all.

So, the stuff that makes me go, "This is the worse thing I've ever read, this is absolute crap, how could I be so stupid as to write this? Whatever made me think I could write? ARGHHHH!" is likely to be better than the stuff that makes me go "eh."

Thanks y'all! Ruth2

Lesson #1 -- be kind to yourself. I'm quite sure you would NEVER say those type of things about someone else's writing. Why on Earth would you say to yourself "how could I be so STUPID as to write ...". I certainly would change that little voice around in your head saying ...hummmmm, I certainly do write exceedingly well. Wonder what would happen if I let it sit for a week or two so I can go back and do a great review and only make minimal changes or perhaps none at all.

Your unconscious mind LOVES to CREATE. Allow it to create without interferrence from your CONSCIOUS. Promise you!! It knows how really well. It is the very, very, very best of all of us and it does everything within it's power to help, heal and keep us alive and well. Learn to trust it and yourself. It will never let you down. It loves you unconditionally.

Hey Pood,

You're right; I'd never say that to anyone about their writing. However I would think it if I thought it was dreck and probably would give my better half an earful about it as well. Thus I figure it's only fair to turn that same eye on my own stuff, if no other reason than to make sure I don't fall into the same vat.

Oh yeah, the mind is incredibly creative. Keystone Cops on steroids. Mine is a trickster and likes getting me embarrassed when it comes to writing. I've got one scene that checks every box I've got for inclusion in my story and it's good!-- but it makes me uncomfortable to read it because it's so erotic. Do I have issues including this scene? You betcha. Is the story weaker if I leave it out? Yep. What am I going to do? I don't know.

So. The assignment is to be kind to Ruth's UC when it's sitting back there going "have I got a scene for you!"

I'm assuming you want the scene in question and not the full manuscript (since it isn't finished...) ?

Lesson #2 of the day -- SEX sells. Sex keeps a lot of us in business. Yesterday's newspaper article -- lady married for quite a number of years. Grown children. She HATES SEX AND NOW REFUSES TO BE 'WITH' HER HUSBAND as it's totally unnecessary because they are having no more children.

All in one of our "fun filled" daze at work.

We'll all review it. Skip doesn't get all the pleasures in this world -- just most of them cuz he is so wunnerful. ;)

Be well~Pood

Oh great. Now how should I send this so it doesn't go viral? How about if I send it to Skip via PM, then he can send it on to you in whatever private fashion he deems fit. (I'd hate for someone to lift it and find in a book that I didn't write, y'know?)

Oh yeah, sex sells. Why do you think vampires go on and on and on (ahem) and werewolves get no love at all?

Skip,

When you say she goes into a trance for six months, does she remain in a trance the whole six months or has she learned how to put herself into a trance when she wants to work?

We all go through various trances throughout the whole day..life is a series of trances. We also pass through a hypnotic trance every 80-120 minutes of the waking day and every morning and every night. The fun part is to "catch it as it passes by". ;)

Hey Pood! Sometimes I think I spend 90% of my time in a trance.

The rest of the time I'm just wool-gathering.
