HI,

good question. Yes certainly you can and should aim to be able to mix up these approaches. They are not mutually exclusive and you can flip from one to another.

There is a rule of thumb that indirect is best suited to 'light' trance and direct better suited to 'deep'. It is a useful rule of thumb but even that can pin a hypnotist in if they take it too seriously.

I see it as a kind of push/pull situation. In therapy I used to begin with indirect, permissive induction then move into more direct statements at the most intensive part of the session. Now I tend to do a rapid and direct induction, sit back and intensify things with more indirect work. I then use a healthy balance of both. Metaphor is an example of indirect suggestion. 'When x happens you will do y' would be direct.

Mix it up.

Best regards,
Anthony

I like to mix it up---the "rule" is, do it and see if it's working, if not, do something else. :) Merlin--that's a good one!

I took, we were told to use direct with people that like to take orders or respond well to orders. For the others we were supposed to use the permissive. I've found in real life that does not hold up well so I tend to go waaaay more permissive.

The rule of thumb doesn't hold up well in my experience either. Milton would say: Let me tell you a little story -- plop out of the chair and onto the floor -- GONE all the way into somnambulism.

I've also been using his idea of having the "problem" as part of the solution. It works soooo very well. It seems as if clients have much more resources than they "thought" they did and I have much less work to do with them.

If you were to spend an entire induction repeating the word
'rhubarb' you might induce trance, if you think you can.

Three times should be enough.

Hey Pood, where can I find out more about this problem as part of the solution idea? Any resources you can recommend cous?

"Every problem is created by it's solution."

It's a presupposition of duality. Every partial of the universe has two things in it or as an aspect.
1) What is wanted
2) Lack of 'what is wanted'

There can be no problem, question, etc unless one is aware, on some level, of the solution or answer. The fun is bring the vague answer/solution into focus (conscious awareness). As human consciousness is simply the focus of the unconscious.

We experience that which we give our attention too as "energy flows and builds where attention goes" (which presupposes nothing get's activated where attention doesn't go.)

IF I am looking at the heads of a quarter, tails is not activated (as part of my experience) unless I turn the quarter over and give my attention to tails.

Everything is always there, it just depends on where one places focus of attention.

Consider... Everyone is Everyone and Everything is Everything.

To Your Best,
Doc Houston
