Does anyone know of one? Not just a shrink, and not someone that comes off as a shrink, but a good, kind, caring person. This city should be swarming with them...
As posted in the announcements section under "what we can and cannot do":
2) We cannot recommend a hypnotherapist or NLP practitioners in your area. That's not our focus. If you're looking for someone, we suggest that you contact either the American Board of Hypnotherapy by sending an email to aih@ix.netcom.com or the National Guild of Hypnotists at https://www.ngh.net/referral.htm
3) We cannot rate hypnotherapists in your area.

I'm sorry.
I was more looking for personal opinions than business recommendations... I have gone through both of those sites, only to get a directory listing of hypnotherapists in my area. I was looking for a bit more personal information than phone number and address (I do have a phone book for that). I figured that since it was in the public forums, and you didn't have to be a practicing hypnotherapist to be here, that it would be ok. Apparently I figured wrong. Again, I'm sorry.
Dont be sorry, it was worth a shot.
And I figure if anyone had some information pertinant to what you requested, they would have responded.
It is just that we arent set up to give recommendations as a forum.
cheers,

Nope. Nobody has to be a practicing hypnotherapist to be here. Anybody can post. And in a way, that is the problem.
If somebody posts that hypnotist A is horrible, hypnotist A doesn't sue the poster, he sues us.
If somebody gets a recommendation here for hypnotist B and goes to him or her, but has a horrible and unsatisfactory experience, they may sue us for giving them such a bad recommendation.
So because we are an open forum, giving recommendations or ratings can be hazardous to our continuation as an open forum. So what is the purpose of this forum? It's not to recommend hypnotists. It's not to give basic instruction in hypnosis. It's not to provide therapy of any kind.
Rather, it is to discuss hypnosis, hypnotherapy, NLP, and related subjects. We can talk about what hypnosis is and is not, how it works, various specific techniques and ideas, working with specific situations, etc.
There is another problem, and this gives me a chance to discuss it. With medical doctors, you can easily find their speciality. They might be oncologists, dentists, pediatricians, ENTs, OB-GYNs, etc. But for hypnosis, many practitioners seem to be generalists.
Can someone who specializes in weight loss and smoking cessation help a person with an intense fear of flying in an airplane? Maybe. Maybe not. Unfortunately, since many, if not most hypnotists imply that they can do anything, consumers often think that just because a hypnotist is good at one thing they are good at another. As the song says, "It ain't necessarily so."
In your initial post you asked for "Not...someone that comes off as a shrink, but a good, kind, caring person." But what does that mean? Many hypnotherapists look to Dr. Milton Erickson as a model. He would frequently begin by giving prospective patients difficult assignments to accomplish. Some patients didn't like what he would have them do...but if they did what he said, they were helped.
Respectfully, all you said was you wanted a nice person. If you were suffering from a brain tumor, would you go to the best brain surgeon or the nicest? I'd like the nicest, but I'd pick the best every time.
Not only that, but you didn't say why you wanted the name of a hypnotherapist. If someone recommends a nice person who is good for smoking cessation but not successful at improving study skills, and you wanted to improve your study skills, it wouldn't matter how nice the hypnotist was--they wouldn't be right for you.
There's no need for you to apologize. You did nothing wrong. If you share what you're looking to accomplish it is possible that an individual might know someone in the area and will recommend them. If so, please be aware that it is only that person's recommendation and does not necessarily reflect the beliefs of this forum or it's owners.
Most of the hypnotists I know--and the ones who regularly post here--don't practice hypnosis just to make money. Rather, they do it because they really enjoy helping people. I can assure you that people here would live to help you in any way they can. But on this forum we can't teach you hypnosis, we cannot rate or recommend hypnotists, and we cannot provide therapy.
