View Full Version : New Trend: "Street Hypnosis"
As a result of being on some other forums, it seems like "the next big thing" is "street hypnosis."
Street hypnosis is to stage hypnosis as street magic is to stage magicians. There are already dozens of videos on you tube:

and this one which is a promo for a DVD which seems to include ripping people's arms out of their sockets:

What do people here think about this new trend?

If "the trend" means going out and roughing people up hypnotically, jerking on their heads, pulling them to the ground violently, embarassing them, for amusement sake, I don't like it. I don't really know what Sean Michael Andrews is about, but I do know that a very respected friend of mine offers trainings with him. So, there must be an ethical core there, and his displays are for a positive purpose.

Sean Michael is very ethical. He lives for hypnosis (as we all pretty much do). He does the instant inductions but like Igor's they are gentle, smooth and awesomefully effective in the hands of ETHICAL people like we are. I believe he also terms them "street hypnosis" even though he does it mostly at beaches. The person he is working with is beyond reproach of any kind by anyone as Connie wrote.
This is where we had the 101 deal Don and you immediately thought back to university which was a most normal thought.
Could be good to delete the links as we have enough problems as it is without people coming here to find more of the same. The first ones were Sean Michael and I can promise you that the young lady was not there for 3 days. Perhaps the YouTube videos are just a way to promote his teachings like Cal Banyon's 8 little words.

I had dinner with my friend who works with Sean Michael Andrews last night. He reports that he's "a good guy." I asked about the leave-the-woman-in-trance-standing-there-for-3-days video. He said it's a joke. I said: what about people who know nothing about hypnosis who look at that on youtube? He said: I suppose they'd get the wrong idea. He also said Sean says it's a very successful marketing tool for him.
I don't know. Entertainment hypnosis has it's place, but those videos do make me uncomfortable.

and here is why. People can see how quickly hypnosis can be in the hands of a skilled professional and secondly if x number of people see person A with hands stuck to whatever, the belief is planted that hypnosis is very, very powerful. Wow! What can it do for me????? Even Jerry Kein does a lot of this at the malls while waiting for his wife to shop. It's great for business be it clients or students.
I had the same beliefs as you and maybe even more so. I fought with one instructor to the bitter end cuz I wasn't gonna do this. You can ask Don. To me it was just plain wrong but I have "softened" up a lot since then and have been seeing what my peers are doing so I guess the water is okay to jump into or perhaps the drugs in my body are affecting my brain.

I can see state legislators getting involved.
passing new laws making hypnosis a criminal offense.

and back to basic training permission should be granted first.
I think that this new trend of "street hypnosis" is not very different from stage hypnosis on the fly.
I also think that education of public on the subject of hypnosis (if we need that) does not have to go through these channels. Probably the word hypnosis will (always?) be associated with something at least "esoterical". I'm quite tired (and I'm a young hypnotist,go figure) of answering the same questions all the time, to the point when asked "What do you do?", I don't say I'm an hypnotist, but I fix problems (or something like that, it is not the precise translation). Anyway, I own material by SMA, while little is new (I'm sure he was also a student of Kein), he is very competent, a good teacher and always very ethical.

If you are ashamed of your chosen profession may I ask why you are in it?
If in your world people are afraid of the word "hypnosis" you can always call yourself a Coach. That takes a lot of the "edge" off. I am not a coach and I don't teach coaching and Jerry would most probably wash your mouth out with soap. I have educated the public and the medical community where I live about hypnosis and in the month of Jan. I had sooo many calls wanting "Help Me Now" it was unreal. I needed no more clients for the year than what called in Jan. I live in one of the most conservative states in the USA. A lady also called in January that wanted to go to an ACHE training and wanted to know my thoughts. I told her it was a good school and I certainly could use the help. GO!!!!

Poodle,
I'm ashamed of my profession? Did I say that? I tend to be quite precise with words. I said I'm getting tired of answering the same (naive...) questions by (different) people. I live in Italy and we have a character on TV, a """"hypnotist""". Every time, I mean, every time!! there is a reference to that character. And I am getting tired, I am not on a mission to educate people in Italy about hypnosis (probably I lack the skills, certainly the will). I teach also at University (nothing medical). Sometimes I like also doing things. So, sometimes using hypnosis without saying the word hypnosis saves me half an hour of chatting I'd like sometimes to avoid. Not everytime, some.

And, while Italy is a wonderful cultural place, in my town (170,000), just to make an example, there are no hypnotists. US is way different. You have to do the best with what you have.

Someone always has to go first. If not you, then who will it be?
I had to go first. You can too. Believe in the "I CAN instead of the I CAN NOT" which is still I CAN.
There is hypnosis in Rome and NLP in northern Italy. Someone had to go first.
Believe in yourself.
Believe in hypnosis.
Believe that you can easily change minds.
What you believe becomes your reality.
Be well~Pood

I kind of like the idea of street hypnosis but what I don't like are these violent guys who do this kung fu hypnosis.
