Hello everyone,
Due to unsuccessful results with doctors, therapists, etc, I've been searching about alternative treatments and came across hypnosis and became interested.
I want to try out self-hypnosis audio and -possibly- visiting a hypnotherapist (got that right?).
There are so many hypnosis companies out there, starting from cheap CDs on ebay to big companies.
Does anyone know the best (i.e., effective) company to purchase such audios? I doubt it's $10 CDs on ebay.
I am interested in relieving anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, agoraphobia, social anxiety, stress, stuttering, and other things like gaining self-esteem, confidence, etc.
Also where's a good place to learn more about hypnosis and hypnotherapists. There are so many places and say so many different things. I am primarily interested in proven, effective techniques to get the best chances. Perhaps experts on this forum can direct me to the correct path.
Thanks!
Ken
Ken,
You sure seem to have a raft of problems, self esteem being one of them.
If self esteem really is an issue with you, how is it that you feel confident, even with advice, in trying to 'self help' yourself via choosing some cd provider and having a go on your own?
And are you independently wealthy?
If not, how are you able to accomplish agorophobia?
Just curious how you do that.

Hi, Ken.
One of the difficulties hypnotherapists have with people seeking help through hypnotherapy is that one of the first things they have to do is "untrain" the people seeking help.
This is because most people get their "training" is what hypnosis and hypnotherapy is from stage shows, TV shows, movies, etc. The thing is, those are all about entertainment, not therapy.
It's kind of weird. We see a movie about vampires and think that was fun, but there are no real vampires. We see another movie that uses hypnosis as a plot point and think that was fun, and that's exactly how hypnosis works.
So when a person comes in for hypnotherapy, the first thing we do is dispel the myths they believe about hypnosis and hypnotherapy.
So how does this apply to your post? Well, there is an underlying assumption in your post that you might not even be aware of. This assumption goes like this:
I'm broken, so I need another person or thing to fix me.
The doctor didn't fix me.
The therapist didn't fix me.
So I'll go to a hypnotist and s/he will fix me.
This is exemplified when you ask for "the best (i.e., effective) company to purchase such audios" from. It implies that one of these CDs will "fix" you and you want to find the one that is most likely to fix you.
Unfortunately, hypnosis doesn't work that way. From the point of view of hypnosis, you aren't broken at all. You're simply doing the best you can with the skills and background you have. No hypnotist can "fix" you. What they can do is provide you with the skills to make changes in your life to achieve the goals you want. Hypnotherapy is a cooperative process. Nobody fixes you. The hypnotherapist is merely a tour guide. You have to choose to take the tour yourself.
So, let's say that you came to hypnotist X for assistance in making the changes you want. Further, let's say that something about hypnotist X just turns you off. Would you pay attention to that hypnotist's suggestions? Probably not. As a result, your hypnotherapy is unlikely to be effective. This is in spite of the fact that hypnotist X is one of the great hypnotists in the world.
On the other hand, maybe you happen to meet hypnotist Y who has just finished basic training in hypnosis, but you just naturally "click" with this person and seem to really like him or her. You are far more likely to list to this hypnotist's suggestions and easily and comfortably allow yourself to change.
Do you understand what I'm saying? Hypnotherapy isn't about the hypnotist--it's about you. You're a unique individual and deserve specialized hypnotherapy. With hypnosis, there is no "one size fits all."
That means a CD or MP3 may not work for anyone else, but might work for you. Another CD or MP3 may work for all of your friends and associates, but might not work for you. It's not about the specific audio recording, it's about how you respond to it.
So even that $10 CD from eBay may help some people. There's no way to know unless you try it. That means you could spend hundreds or thousands of dollars buying recordings with the hopes that one will work for you. Will it? I have no way to know. On the other hand, if you go to a trained and experienced hypnotherapist, he or she will be able to work with you to develop suggestions specifically meant for you and you're far more likely to achieve success.
Let's assume that you go to a hypnotist and say, "I have this bad pain in my right arm. Can you make the pain go away." The good news is that hypnosis can be very successful in eliminating pain. It's great for that purpose. However, the first thing any hypnotist would do is take you to an MD as pain in the right arm could be a sign of something much more severe. Your diagnosis of merely needing pain relief was totally wrong and could cost you your life.
Now, let's look at your list of self-diagnosed problems: "relieving anxiety, OCD, panic attacks, agoraphobia, social anxiety, stress, stuttering, and other things like gaining self-esteem, confidence." Holy moley! If I had all those problems I think I'd go into a corner and hide. So the fact that you're asking about all of these things is a great sign, showing bravery in confronting your issues. So how many drugs are you taking for all of these things? After all, most of those things are professional diagnoses and chances are you have have been treated with drugs after you receive your diagnosis.
Or is it possible that you've been reading articles and books that have resulted in your untrained self-diagnosis? Would you go to a doctor and say, "I have a pain in my arm and need to be treated for a heart attack?" Wouldn't it be better to go to the doctor and say "I have a pain in my arm" and let the professional, the doctor, examine it and find out what's going on? If the cause was a broken arm, treating you for heart attack wouldn't do much good. Alternatively, putting a cast on your arm wouldn't help if you're having a heart attack.
I'm not a doctor and most of the people here aren't MDs, either. We don't work with diagnoses like the ones you gave, but we do work with MDs. IF you were diagnosed by a licensed physician, talk to him or her and get a referral to a hypnotist. If you go to an ethical hypnotist and they discover you've been diagnosed and are being treated by an MD, they'd want to work with the MD.
But, if, as I guess, these are your own diagnoses, we'd just scrap them and ask for your symptoms. You claim you have OCD. Why? What are the symptoms? What would you prefer to do? Let's work on that. You say you have agoraphobia. Why? What are the symptoms? Do you know the definition of a phobia? How does this qualify? What would you rather do? Let's work on that.
With all of this information, here are the direct answers to your questions:
Is there a best company for making hypnosis CDs? The best one is the one that will work for you. Nobody can guess which one that will be.
Can a hypnotherapist help you? Absolutely! Find one who is trained and experienced.
Can hypnotherapy fix you? No, but you don't need "fixing," you merely need to change to meet your desired goals. For that, you and your hypnotherapist can work together.
Can the hypnotherapy help me with all of these diagnosed problems? If they are real diagnoses, and not your untrained self-diagnoses, then a hypnotherapist can work with your physician and you to help you rapidly achieve your goals for change. If they are untrained self-diagnoses, a hypnotherapist will ask you about your symptoms and will work to help you change so that you no longer have behaviors and beliefs you don't want to have.
Good luck!
