View Full Version : Memorization techniques for paragraphs ?
Does anyone know of techniques to memorize paragraphs of text EXACTLY as is , and not in context ?
Most of the memory techniques I came through deals with lists of items , numbers ..etc.
but it doesn't work for me when trying to memorize paragraphs
Thanks

May I ask what you need this for?
Hm. I wouldn't know any technique. Judging from what I already know, my hints would be:
Make it IMPORTANT, make it EMOTIONAL, and REPEAT it.
Copy the paragraph and have it all around your flat.
Use the list-techniques you already know. It is a list of words, after all.
Record it on a cassette, turn the volume low, and listen to it all day long.
Highlight keywords and work on those.

I need it for studies I'm making , we're required to memorize parts of paragraphs , as well as rules that are usually 15-30 words long
but we have over two hundred of these
the subject is similar to legislation , so you need to memorize EXACTLY what's there , not your understanding of it.
Thanks for your tips , I'm trying to make it important ,
I wonder what NLP methods would increse the priority of something in your mind/heart

Pick up one of Harry Lorayne's books... I just read "suer memory - super student" and he lists many techniques for what you need.
and to practice, memorize our threads :D

I'm waiting for two books to arrive in the mail
Harry's
"The Memory Book : The Classic Guide to Improving Your Memory at Work, at School, and at Play "
and
"Remember Everything You Read : The Evelyn Wood 7-Day Speed Reading & Learning Program "
by Stanley D. Frank
did you read any ?
I actually somehow forgot that I ordered it  !!! it's been a couple of weeks
this gives you an idea about the memory issue I'm having
and no , I don't the threads here literally  , but I think I remember most of the context of the one's I find useful for myself

I didn't predict Merlin to do so , but I like her posts , if she has some input to put here, I'll be glad to read

Use chunking.
Chunk the sentences into say 2 or 3 sentences. Say memorise the first 3 sentences and label them as CHUNK 1. Then the next 3 sentences as CHUNK 2 etc. Chunking them makes the brain associate the 3 or 4 sentences within the chunk, literally linking them together.
It helps to practice to write the essay out in their chunks. You may need to do this a few times.
I use to be able to commit to memory an entire essay, and then just write it out in the exam in uni. and all the exact words will flow out. I usually need to write them out about once, and then write them out in my mind (MENTALLY) during my free time.

I like Harry Lorraine and Kevin Tredeau's techniques
1 is a tree
2 is a switch
3 is a stool
.....
its pretty easy in the end but it wont make one memorise the thing word for word. Its more for remmebering points and facts

Find your v/a/k modalities and submodalities and work with them, that helps. Also, if you get to be alone, you should write it down, then read it with a lot of expression, almost as if you're parodying it on a stage. repeat three times: the first time just read off the paper, looking away whenever you can; the second, have the ending of each sentence covered and read looking away whenever you can; the third have the start of each sentance covered, again looking away when you can. take a break, and you should be able to recall it given the first word or so. if you make a mistake, it usually helps to conciously acknowledge, "its ABC, not ADC," or whatever your mistake was.

No. If it come's there'll be a reply with something that hints at real information but in fact contains none whatsoever. :)

I experimented a bit with my keywords scheme - find images for the keywords and link them into a little story. I can still reproduce the keywords, even though I only did it very casually and even though it was a highly philosophical text.
One problem with this method obviously is that you lose all the "little" words in between - was it "and" or "or" now, and so on... And I couldn't tell you anything about that paragraph's meaning, I only know the words.

Try to remember what the text itself looked like, then picture the whole thing when needed.Generly this helps to start things flowing.Practise is the only way to work with any technique ofcourse :)
Rodimus, I'm familier with visualisaztion of numbers with the mneamic system but how is the scheme of your list?I can see the 1 and tree but 2 and switch? Not trying to be a prick , just curious.
