Hi all,
I am new to these forums. I am curious how far hypnosis can go in order to help a persons memory for retaining new things? I would like to use the term "photographic memory" but a lot of people would argue there is no such thing.
From all of your experience (meaning all of you here) how feasible is it to develop a memory using hypnotic techiques that will allow one to remember new things at will, such as the content of a text book or something similar?
Perhaps (I could be wrong, feel free to correct me) a more technical way to explain it is, to allow new things from the short term memory be stored in the long term memory almost or close to instantly or maybe even bypass the short term part altogether?
Thanks for all of your input.

There most certainly is such a thing, and hypnosis can achieve it. Really, all you need to put in a script (a dreaded word for me) for it is "whenever I see anything that may be interesting, I will (mentally) take a picture of it and put copies of it in folders (using computer terminology) labeled for the day, purpose, etc."
Easier said than done, though because you would have to be in at least a moderately deep hypnotic trance for it to work well.

Hi all,

I just thought of this: under no circumstance should you bypass the short term part of your memory. It's there for a reason: if you were to remember everything you ever saw, heard, or felt, you would be overwhelmed and unable to do simple cognetive processes.

to be mildly anal retentive the name for photgraphic memory is Ididic memory ( I may have selled this wrong), but even the people who are the best at this use some kind of mental device. Putting photos in several folders is one building stories is another stopping occationaly and asking Who, What, When, and Where (their is a graghical representation for this), are all good ways and are all used. Find out how your mind work that will help you find the best and fastest method. sorry I can't be of more help.

Photographic memory refers to people (if I remember correctly...no pun intended) who keep seeing the image of something perfectly after they close their eyes and can describe every detail is if their eyes were still open. I think anything else would be enchanced recall or such, rather than photographic memory.
Here's a question I've had for awhile, though..
In the hypnosis field, I often hear that we remember absolutely every sensory input, somewhere deep down. If I were to show a "responsive/good" hypnotic subject a page of scrambled letters upside down for a bit, could we get him to recall every letter? To rewrite the whole thing?

I'm blessed with a semi-eidetic memory, believe it or not. I can remember vast amounts of stuff from years ago, but usually contextual trivia, like Dr Who starting the day Kennedy was shot. I can also remember long pieces of music in my head, including lyrics. Who needs an iPod? :) Perfect for the dentist's chair ;)
Yes, trance enhances that ability, but equally, the physical ability to build new neural connections in a reasonable time is something that needs working on, too.
There are techniques such as Mind Mapping that can help. According to James Burke in his "Connections" series, in the middle ages, some scholars were capable of remembering vast amounts of stuff by visualising it. Paper was scarce, you see.
I saw that "Connections" programme just once, when I lived as an ex-pat in New England in 1993. It was October and it was freezing cold! I'd been over the border up Route 95 to the New Hampshire State Liquor store to buy a couple of cases of Paolo Toscano Chianti Classico that afternoon and had ended up in Kittery in Maine in the outlet malls doing girly shopping :) It was a Sunday. See? Trivia.
But what I had for breakfast this morning is anyone's guess.
Look up Win Winger on google.
Also look up Alcibides System of Loci

I think you have access to some sort of super google:) . I couldnt find anything about Alcibides System of Loci on google the last time you talked about it. The only thing that comes up is your post:D . And I can't find any Win Winger either. Well at least not on google.
Sorry you are having trouble.
Search 'memory system of loci'
and I spelled Win's name wrong, try 'win wenger'

Hello Anthony,
>Photographic memory refers to people who keep seeing the image of something perfectly after they close their eyes and can describe every detail is if their eyes were still open.
This is often brought about by trance.
This has been written about extensively.
