I read on these forums that recalling a repressed childhood language (in my case Italian) is possible through hypnosis. However, is it also possible through NLP? I have some experience using recorded suggestions at the alpha/theta levels, so could it be done via this route?

Any suggestions you have about it would be great. Thanks.

Hi Guest,

The simple answer is yes it can be done using NLP. Which I am sure would lead to you most likely asking how to do it using NLP. The answer of how to recall a forgotten language using NLP would be determined by the individual who is the client. Here is why:

Bandler describes NLP as an attitude and a methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques because there is no one way to approach a presenting problem. You have to go in with an attitude of curiosity, an ability to be flexible and take a methodical approach to discovering the pattern so that you are able to interrupt the pattern.

Your pattern for forgetting the language may be different from another individual’s pattern, so the techniques to break the pattern and remember the language would be different.

Having said that, techniques I have used in the past to help people remember things include Hypnosis, Time Line Therapy(TM) and NLP. With NLP, I have specifically used submodality techniques, anchoring, parts integration and a bunch of other techniques.

You have a goal of remember the language and if you approach this with the correct attitude and methodology I am sure you will be successful.

Thanks for your reply DrJames.

Could you (or any other member here) elaborate on what you mean by the "pattern" for forgetting the language? Would I have to regress myself back into my childhood and then apply some techniques? I've used NLP thus far mostly for self-improvement (ie phobias, confidence, etc.). The idea of delving into my memory is something fairly new to me (yet very interesting). Any additional comments you have would be great, or if you know of an external resource where I could read further about the topic :) ....

Hi Guest,

You’re welcome.

A pattern is just a general term for something going on for an individual (usually at the unconscious). For example, you can have a pattern that you do every time you encounter an external stimulus such as having a fearful response or an excited response.

In the example you gave, I am not sure why you are blocking a language you learned at a young age. However, it is obviously a pattern that is occurring because you are unable to remember it. Using another NLP term, by conducting a detailed personal history, I would be able to chunk down (or get more specific) on the pattern and describe it more specifically.

Hope that helps!
