I was just wondering - in the above (rather lengthy) video the clinical hypnotherapist keeps talking throughout the surgery - keeping the patient in deep hypnotic trance. Isn't it possible just to put the patient in the famous "Esdaile" state and not have to keep "deepening" throughout the surgery?

Yes, but we all practise within our own comfort zone, and that is based on our experience and practised skills. In my early days, I had failures, just as we all did, but today my skills and experience allow me to be successful every time. One day I may find someone whom I am unable to hypnotise, PERHAPS......:D I would ask you however, if this was your first time working with this situation, would you have the nerve to leave the room while the opertation was going on? Even if you had done this scores of times, would you feel that comfortable? If not, would you not feel better talking constantly to your client? I know I would, and I am damn good....

Well, if you put it that way, I guess I would just keep talking.

"Esdaile" is a special state, and for many, difficult to achieve.
Yes, it works for those who have that skill, but few do.
